Ten swimmers from Olivet Nazarene University will swim across Lake Michigan on Saturday and Sunday to raise money for a portion of the 786 million people around the world who live without clean water.

The team, called Water 4 Water, will take off from North Avenue Beach in Chicago at 6 a.m. Saturday morning. Their goal is to arrive at Michigan City Harbor Beach 34 hours later, about 4 p.m. Sunday, after swimming a 50-mile route.

Water 4 Water has raised more than $11,000 for clean water through World Vision, a Christian relief and development organization. World Vision puts those funds towards their Water, Sanitation and Hygiene programs. WASH develops clean water projects in addition to sanitation and hygiene education in impoverished rural communities in Africa.

The swimmers were inspired last fall when a pastor representing Team World Vision spoke at one of Olivet's chapel services. Team World Vision is a branch of World Vision that uses running and triathlons as a way to raise funds for WASH. The WASH program has provided about 12 million people with clean water.

After hearing about the difference WASH makes, two varsity swimmers, junior Calvin Price and senior Simon Pheasant, both of South Africa, chose to become involved. They recruited some of their teammates on the Olivet swim team and formed Water 4 Water.

The team hopes to aid 2,000 additional people as $50 will provide one person with clean water for a generation. Through funds collected to date, 220 people will now have access to clean water for life

A.P News [tongue in cheek]

We are saddened to report that 10 swimmers of the Water 4 Water group died in the hospital yesterday after contracting very weird infections from long exposure to lake Michigan water. Dr. Oolon Rufus Colluphid , a noted physician, said that there were all kinds of "cooties" and other stuff in that lake and it's a wonder the swimmers didn't just dissolve. As it happened, numerous members of the team had their arms and legs just fall off while in the hospital.

That lake has every kind of ecoli and "what-cha-macall-it" bug you ever heard of in there said the Dr. It's late in the season and all those kids have been peeing in that lake since early summer. When we reminded the good doctor that most communities got their drinking water supply from lake Michigan, he retorted that water in general was bad for you and that he himself never touched the stuff. " I drink whiskey or nothing at all."

Dr.Oolon Rufus Colluphid then stormed off wearing a plastic bag over his head because the fumes from he NIPSCO cooling tower can melt your brain.
