LaPorte, IN.- Investigators from the LaPorte County Sheriff's Office are investigating a motor vehicle crash involving two motor vehicles that occurred Tuesday morning, September 16th, 2014 at approximately 7:25AM (CST) that claimed the life of one person. Sheriff's Deputies from the LaPorte County Sheriff's Office, along with fire fighters from the Westville Fire Department and medical personnel from LaPorte County EMS responded to the area of 0101 North U.S. Highway 421, in LaPorte County after the LaPorte County E-911 Dispatch Center received a 911 call of a collision between two vehicles. Sheriff's deputies first on scene located two vehicles, one vehicle identified as a 2007 Ford Explorer SUV, the other a 2003 Chevy Monte Carlo. As a result of the crash, a sole occupant and driver of the Chevy Monte Carlo was pronounced dead at the scene by LaPorte County Deputy Coroner, Mark Huffman. The decedent's identity is being withheld pending notification to the family. The driver and occupants of the SUV were transported by ambulance to St. Anthony's Hospital in Michigan City for treatment and observation. The extent of their injuries is not yet known. A portion of U.S. Highway 421 was shut down for several hours as investigators tried to determine the cause of the crash. The LaPorte County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the crash scene by members of the Westville Fire Department and Indiana Department of Transportation, IN DOT. The crash remains under investigation.

That has always been a dangerous area at that location.

That whole stretch of 421 between I-94 and PNC has always been bad. I've always referred the area between I-94 and the campground as "the runway". I recall when I first moved out here that a group of PNC student nurses from Valpo perished when their vehicle hit an icy patch on 421 and hit head on with a snow plow. They were heading to St. Anthony Hospital to do their lab work.
