For those who have never taken in a preformance of the Second City comedy troop in Chicago... well what the hell is wrong with you? smile.gif SC is an improv comedy group famous for their skits and for the famous alumni who have moved on to do big things. For a long time SC was a big feeder to SNL, and include famous names such as John Belushi, John Candy, Bill Murray, and more recently Steve Carrell and Stephen Colbert. On top of the great show, it looks like it is supporting a great cause in City. Get the word out and be there!

Second City show fundraiser for YPTC

The News-Dispatch

MICHIGAN CITY - The Young People's Theatre Company is looking to a legendary performing group to make its fundraising event a success.

The Second City, Chicago's famed comedy troupe, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 21, at the Elston Middle School Performing Arts Center, 1210 Spring St. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students with identification. The show is not recommended for pre-teens or people who are easily offended.

The Second City performance will feature sketches, songs and improvisations based on current topics. Known for its hilarious satire, the traveling troupe considers no topic off limits, including President Barack Obama.

The Second City has trained some of the world's best comedy artists, including Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell among others.

Proceeds from the performance will support YPTC's annual productions of well-known musicals. The non-profit theater group was founded in 2004 to give La Porte County teens an opportunity to cultivate a love of theater. It has successfully staged performances of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," "Beauty and the Beast," "Scrooge: The Musical," "The Wiz" and "The Wizard of Oz."

Call 873-2070 for tickets, which also will be sold at the door before the show.

Second City touring comedian Tim Stoltenberg began his improvisation training as a youngster without even realizing what he was doing.

"I remember as a kid taking acting classes and we would fool around on the side," he recalled. "We were goofing around and making up characters and making stuff up. At the time, improv wasn't as mainstream as it is now and as I got older and got a little more training, I realized 'Oh, the stuff we were doing on the side is improv, and it was a lot of fun.'"

Scheduled to perform with fellow Second City touring members July 31 at Michigan City's Elston Middle School Performing Arts Center, Stoltenberg was reared in Wisconsin and spent several years in comedy troupes on his homefront before making his way to Atlanta. There, he continued honing his comedic chops and served as the improve director of the city's acclaimed Dad's Garage Theatre.

Stoltenberg first joined Second City when a touring ensemble made its way to Atlanta in 2008 and, last year, he relocated to Chicago. Along with his performing duties for Second City, Stoltenberg also showcases his talents at Chicago's prestigious Improv Olympic.

A fan of Second City alumnus and pioneering early "Saturday Night Live" comics such as Dan Ackroyd and Bill Murray, Stoltenberg is grateful to perform and learn at the beloved comedy institution.

"They have such a rich history," he said. ""As an improviser and as a sketch comedian, you look at (Second City) and think 'Wow. It would be amazing to work with that company.' Second City, as an institution, gave a stage to comedic voices that said 'Take a risk. Do something that's edgy and funny and see what happens.'"

In addition to performing for comedy fans throughout the country, Stoltenberg and the touring troupe also performs at Second City's Chicago home base at 1616 N. Wells St. Saturday afternoons and Monday nights.

The current touring show pays tribute to Second City's 50th anniversary, with selected beloved skits from the organization's rich history re–enacted. While honored to recreate their classic bits, Stoltenberg equally enjoys having a hand in creating what he hopes are future Second City favorites.

"The directors and the producers and the actors that you work with are on the same page about writing new stuff, about getting new ideas out there, about taking risks onstage, which as an actor really draws you in," he said. "They have a good formula for giving artists an avenue to express themselves in front of a live audience."

Second City's July 31 performance at Elston Middle School Performing Arts Center is a benefit for Michigan City's Young People's Theatre Company and Dunebrook Prevent Child Abuse LaPorte County.

The wife and I went to the show last night, and it was awesome. Second City is spectacular, and this touring group was no different. I hope they raised lots of money!
