I know it's been brought up a number of times here, what could be done with the old train station. What ideas do you guys think would actually work in that location. There IS a captive audience in the sense of people waiting for trains. The obvious ones are cafe, sandwhich shop, etc. What else do you think could work in that location? My buddy recently purchased it and intends to clean it up but wants to get an idea of what people in the city want there.

I posted the question on the CBTL facebook page, as I think it is a great one. Personally I would love to see it turned into a South Shore/train museum, with a train related gift shop, and and old fashioned diner. I don't know if any of that is realistic, but it is what I would love to see happen.

That sounds pretty cool and there is surely room for some sort of museum aspect but we need to find a money maker! Mike, is there where you take the train from everyday? What would commuters want? I wonder if a shuttle would be of benefit for out of towners (during the right season)?

I have taken the train from 11th when it was on my schedule. Honestly, the amount of people who get on at that stop is so small, I doubt anything commuter based would survive. It is a tiny stop. |

so parking IS the constraint? Should we just bulldoze the building and put in some parking?

Lack of parking is a problem during the day and on busy weekends.
I'd say put in a Starbucks or similar. I'd go. Open up the upper level like a verandah or something. Get an agreement with the decorating shop across the street to use their parking lot in the evenings when no one is there. You might check with city fathers and see what they'd like there. Maybe get a grant to help. I'd hate to see the building get razed. Maybe you could keep the facade anyway. The rest of the building is just crumbling bricks. Churches and schools should not be havens for creeps.

The rest of the building is just crumbling bricks. Actually the building is very solid. True, it's from 1929 but it is a brick building. The inside is essentially gutted with the exception of the decorative columns which are on top of the structural columns. But no, it is surpisingly solid. |

I have no idea what the interior of that building looks like. Is it a true two story building, or is it just a vaulted ceiling. If its your friend who owns it, maybe he would let you go in and take photographs that you could post here. Or heck, maybe a private showing to all CBTL posters?

I did a quick check on Beacon. The new owner of the property is George Xidias, who owns Apex Muffler on Franklin Street and the old car wash at Barker and Woodland.

Nope, that's not my friend nor is it the new owner. If you look at the rest of the info you'll see that this George fella bought it originally in 98. It looks like he transferred ownership at one point to an LLC and then back to his name again. In anycase, George is no longer the owner. It is a true two story building. When it was first built, there was a restaurant in that building along with a waiting area, ticket counter, etc. It has a full upstairs and a basement as well. I guess the South Shore used to have a bus company as well and these buses were stored and maintained at this location. The back of the building was the bus work garage. Inside the main room there are six structural columns which have wood built around them to look like a Doric column. Those are going to stay. |

My friend bought it from the guy you're citing. The beacon site is great but it doesn't update immediately. |

Or heck, maybe a private showing to all CBTL posters? OK, I think this is gonna be doable. I think everyone on this site share a common thread; we care about the city and the direction it's headed in the future. I think the CBTL community could offer some good input. Who else would be interested here on getting a behind the scenes tour in the next week or two? |

I'm in!
I was last inside there in the 70's. It was a really cool place in my mind and my memory of it is pretty vivid. I'd be interested to see it, and I do have a few ideas of what to put there, but an inside tour would be helpful to see which ideas might work best.
