After statewide, regional, and local dips in unemployment in April, the rate rose again in May, as had been predicted by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development (DWD).

On Friday the DWD released the unemployment report for May, when Indiana’s preliminary seasonally-adjusted rate rose to 10.6 percent from 9.9 percent in April. The national seasonally-adusted rate in May was 9.4 percent.

“As expected, extended furloughs and layoffs in the U.S. auto industry greatly affected Indiana’s employment picture in May,” said DWD Commissioner Teresa Voors. “Indiana may see the ripple effect over the next few months as suppliers, dealerships, and other service providers adjust to the new business models of the domestic auto companies.”

Indiana’s 10.6 percent unemployment rate in May is still more than two points shy of the 12.8 percent rate posted in November 1982. Only 12 months ago, however, in May 2008, the rate stood at 5.3 percent, exactly half of where it is now.

Illinois reported an unemployment rate of 10.1 percent in May; Michigan, of 14.1 percent; Ohio, 10.8 percent; and Kentucky, 10.6 percent.

Data for the towns of Porter and Burns Harbor were not available.
