City by the Lake.org, The Voice of Michigan City, Indiana _ City Talk _ Demolition of Former Goerg Boats

Posted by: chuck Dec 5 2012, 07:18 PM

More than four years ago Jim Jaksa and Jeff Katz led an effort to gain public ownership of the former Goerg Boats Property by the Franklin St Bridge. The Port Authority acquired the then Ace Body Shop on US 12 and agreed to trade it with the Indiana DNR after the DNR removed the buildings on the Goerg site. DNR has used the US 12 building the past four years while they pursued the demolition on Franklin St. The lower level walls support both Franklin St and the bridge. In any case demolition is progressing and the final deed transfers cant be far away. Jim and Jeff deserve credit for a job well done.

Thanks indeed. It was great to see the picture circulating of the building coming down!

I SAW that yesterday! A BIG thanks to Jeff and the other gentleman involved. I think it's great and look forward to having SOMETHING (almost anything) other than the old Goerg's building.

Great to see it go. What's the latest on the La Vita Dolche "Ice Creame Parlor" (the unfinished building in the background)?

The Marina is now completely down and gone. Even with an empty hole there, the area looks so much better!
