Michigan City airport to study U.S. 20 move
Times Staff MICHIGAN CITY — The Michigan City Municipal-Phillips Field Airport has secured a $150,000 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to study relocating U.S. 20 to make way for an extension of its runway safety area. The airport hopes to start the project in 2018, according to airport manager Jessica Ward. The current plan is to create an underpass for U.S. 20 so the runway safety area can be extended southward above the road. The runway now ends just north of U.S. 20. The project would actually have the impact of making the runway longer, since part of its south end now has to be reserved as an FAA-required safety area. The FAA grant will fund an environmental assessment of the project, which will determine if the current plan is feasible. U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Indiana, welcomed the news along with Michigan City Ron Meer. “Michigan City has consistently made progress to invest in their transportation infrastructure and invigorate their economy," Visclosky said. "I commend them on this latest investment in the airport that will continue to create benefits for current residents and draw new visitors to their great community.” |

This would be great. It means more opportunity for tourism and bigger businesses to locate here.
