Both Chesterton and LP's K-Mart's are closing. Somehow the Michigan City Sears is not.

So why not designate the now hollowed out Maple Lane Mall or LaPorte Town Square....into a: Green Development Zone. And populate it with Habitat for Humanity homes as its being done in other communities across America:

Kmart departure fuels doubt on LaPorte mall's future

Stan Maddux Times Correspondent

LAPORTE — The recent announcement that Kmart is closing its store is fueling speculation about the future of the long-struggling Maple Lane Mall on the city's west side.

Kmart is scheduled to shut its doors March 26.

This comes just months after Al's Supermarket, the other anchor helping to keep what was already a partially empty mall afloat, left the premises.

Only Dunham's Sports, Family Dollar and a Chinese restaurant, Gourmet House, will be left at a place that once housed 20 stores and enough shoppers for Santa Claus to come yearly and greet children.

"It's kind of sad," said Samantha Underwood, who has lived in LaPorte for more than 20 years.

LaPorte Chamber of Commerce President Rita Mrozinski said she and community leaders plan to meet again soon to discuss if something can be done to help the once bustling mall.

"We're going to kind of go from there," Mrozinski said.

The downturn seemed to begin in the 1990s when Levine's department store, a well-established anchor for the mall, shut its doors.

Businesses like a record store and arcade in the center of the mall continued, but in 2007 there was nothing left in the middle. Ever since, it's functioned as a strip mall.

Plans to reinvigorate and expand the mall on 10 acres later emerged, but then everything stalled when the Great Recession hit.

In 2013, much of the empty space was filled by Tely's, a fine dining, musical entertainment venue with close to 1,000 seats that drew large numbers especially on weekends.

That was later replaced by Johnny's Roadhouse, billed as Northwest Indiana's largest nightclub, that now sits idle.

"I'm going to miss it," said Carol Dombrowski, who for years has regularly made the 20-minute trip from Michigan City to shop at the Kmart.

She said the mall looks more like a ghost town, similar to what's happening in her hometown at Marquette Mall, which has lost anchors like J.C. Penney and Applebee's in the last year or two.

"It's just a shame another store bites the dust," Dombrowski said.

LaPorte City Councilman Roger Galloway said most of the citizens he talks with over coffee and doughnuts have given up on the mall and feel it's best just to tear it down and redevelop the grounds.

His preference would be for a comeback at the mall to help consumers not just on the west side but also the entire city have more choices.

Galloway also said it wouldn't be a bad location for a new LaPorte Hospital, with Ind. 2 and Ind. 39 running beside it and plenty of parking.

"You used to see so many happy people just walking around in the mall. It doesn't make any sense. I don't think there's any hope," Underwood said.

The website Seeking Alpha states that with the sale of the Craftsman brand and the recent store closures shiould keep Sears operational until mid-2018.

Sears Closing Catalog Outlets Ahead Of Schedule

August 17, 1993|By John Schmeltzer. Tribune Staff Writer.

The remaining remnant of the "Big Book" catalog of Sears, Roebuck and Co., the company's catalog outlet stores, will be shuttered at the end of September, the company announced Monday.

Sears said the remaining 67 catalog stores, including seven in the Chicago area, and three catalog warehouses will be closed, virtually completing the closure of the 106-year-old catalog operation.

The company had anticipated the stores would remain open until the end of the year, but merchandise has been selling quicker than anticipated.

"Now it looks like early fall and almost certainly by Sept. 30," said Al Mathes, a spokesman for Sears' catalog division.

In the Chicago area, the biggest blow from the closing will be felt at the Gurnee Mills Outlet Mall, where Sears has an 85,000-square-foot store.

But the departure at Gurnee Mills is being softened by this fall's arrival of a 40,000-square-foot T.J. Maxx store, an 82,000-square-foot Burlington Coat Factory store, and the December opening of a 10-screen theater, according to Steven Jacobsen, senior vice president of retail development for Western Development Co., developer of the outlet mall.

"It's unfortunate. But it has nothing to do with mall," said Jacobsen, noting that of 14 possible locations for anchor stores, 12 are occupied. "We're not happy to see it (the closing), but with T.J. Maxx, Burlington Coat Factory and the theater at the north end of the center, that will help a lot."

Sears already has closed 24 of the original 91 outlet stores, which sold surplus merchandise from its catalog operation.

The remaining 67 outlet stores in 25 states will mark down prices to speed up the liquidation of the remaining merchandise, Mathes said.

Two of the five warehouses that supplied the outlet stores already have closed.

The warehouses that will close are in Greensboro, N.C.; Kansas City, Mo.; and Columbus, Ohio.

Outlet stores to close here besides Gurnee Mills are in Countryside, Wheeling, Addison, Chicago, Downers Grove and Crestwood.

Sears stopped taking orders from its catalog May 27.

******************

Now then, had Sears RETAINED its vast catalog outlet stores instead of shuttering them back in 93, it would already have the infrastructure to pioneer online web based retailing of its brand name items a few years later.

WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN. ohmy.gif

With news that both Sears and Macy’s are closing stores across the country as both retailers struggle to adapt to the digital-shopping age, what is the future for these once mighty and iconic brands?

Just ordered a replacement part for my moms garden tractor (steering shaft) from searspartsdirect.com.

The base price for part was $72.28.

I was able to find a promo code for $5.00 off from retailmenot.com.

It was $9.99 for standard shipping (next Friday estimated delivery) to my house (the tractor is up on ramps and in pieces in my garage right now)

Indiana Sales tax was $5.41.

The whole kicker was I could have gotten free site to store pick-up but my only pickup option was on 95th street on the southside of Chicago in one of the worst parts of the windy city.

No wonder why Sears is about to go out of business.
