MCHS mourns loss

Senior Chantel Mack passed away this week

MICHIGAN CITY — A Michigan City High School senior has passed away, but additional details have not been released.

Michigan City Area Schools spokeswoman Betsy Kohn said the school is “mourning the loss” of senior Chantel Mack, and school counselors are available for students during the grieving process.

“They are speaking to the students, especially the ones closely impacted by this,” Kohn said, adding that “about a dozen” students were released from MCHS on Thursday, the day school officials heard the news from Mack’s family.

That, Kohn says, is a part of the school’s “crisis plan.”

Kohn was unsure if Mack participated in any groups, teams or extracurricular activities while enrolled at MCHS.

A moment of silence was held Friday morning to remember the student.

“Whenever a student passes, it always has an impact on the school family,” Kohn said.

Kohn also addressed rumors the student’s passing took place at a school bus stop.

She said from what she has looked into, that scenario “was not involved.”
