City by the Lake.org, The Voice of Michigan City, Indiana _ City at rest _ Site stats thread

By special request some interesting facts and figures about Citybythelake.org

96 members, 61 of whom have made at least one post (normal ratio is about 2:1)

10 busiest posting days...

1. 82 May 8, 2008
2. 81 Dec 5, 2007
3. 80 Jan 9, 2008
4. 79 Nov 6, 2007
5. 72 Nov 30, 2007
6. 68 Oct 15, 2007
7. 66 (TIE)Nov 13, 2007 and Jan 2, 2008
8. 65 Nov 9, 2007
9. 63 Oct 24, 2007
10. 62 July 17, 2007

Since its inception, CBTL has had just over 207,000 topic views. The highest viewing month was over 20,000 during the last election cycle, in November 2007.

Unfortunately the invision software doesn't track all IP hits. I think I could get that info from my server host, but I don't have it in front of me (and I can't remember that log in). Typically we get about 10 people make at least one post per day. By my highly unscientific estimations (I can see guest IPs as an administrator) there are somewhere around 25-30 regular guest readers on a normal weekday. Weekends are much slower.

Could you list the most-frequent posters? I saw that Ang passed me up--sacré bleu, c'est insupportable!

That is available to all. On the front page, towards the bottom there is a section labeled "board statistics" which lists the all-time posting levels for each member of the site.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik May 13 2008, 11:08 AM

Interesting. I wish the three-digit list was longer, but what the hey.

We're working on it. The core poster base is growing slowly but surely. A really bright sign is almost everyone in the top 20 posts is someone who visits the site regularly.

The interesting question now is will we hit 10,000 posts or 100 members first?

Let me guess -- the day Roger came back from hiatus?

Once again, Rog, glad to see you back! Need more talking on here!

I would be curious as to how many of the guests are repeat viewers, as opposed to one time drive-bys. If you come across this info, please post it!
Not too much info, though. Gotta respect people's privacy and all. Just general figures. Some folks want to be incognito, ya know!

Yes the #1 posting day was the return of Roger, how appropriate, right?

I based my guestimates off of the seeing some of the same IPs everyday as guests. I have noticed a definite uptrend in guest surfing lately though. I'll see what I can complile.

Posted by: southsider2k7 May 13 2008, 02:04 PM

Some highly unscientific research... I started jotting down all guest IPs that showed up as viewing the site from my last post at about 1:15pm.

14 unique IP addresses showed up. 3 I determined to be either search engines, spambots, or something similar (foreign IPs is the big disqualifier, another is the internet servers they use).

That leaves 11 readers in a little under two hours time. I think my prior estimates of 25-30 guest readers per day might have been a little low.

Posted by: southsider2k7 May 13 2008, 02:20 PM

Yeah it turns out I was REALLY wrong for unique viewers (I emailed my server host, I couldn't take it anymore!)

Unique views have averaged about 160-170 during the recent weekdays. Hit counts are in the 15-18K per day range. I do not have a number to distinguish bot type users from regular users, but if we look at something like the 80-90% ratio that I just noted previously, that means we're in the vicinity of 150 people looking at the site each day. When our viewing audience is pretty limited in a town of 30,000 people, that isn't bad at all, especially when this site was founded only in Dec of 2006 with about 5 people to start with.

Posted by: CaddyRich May 13 2008, 06:46 PM

One question - If my number of posts were to increase dramatically as I pass edgywood on the all time list, would anyone scream "Steroids!!!" and then want to add an asterisk? LOL

I like!

Considering the numbers, that's like a national message board having 1.5 million viewers daily. There would have do be webmasters who would kill for numbers like that.

Not to mention this place is addictive. I'd think the numbers would just continually go up.

Members of the other message board I frequent sometimes refer to it being as addictive as "chocolate covered crack."

Yeah, when you start eliminating breakout groups and putting the viewers size in perspective, the numbers are really impressive. First of all the viewing audience is pretty well limited when you consider Michigan City is a town of 30,000 people. Pretty much if you are living, or haven't lived there, why would you care? Next you get to eliminate those without computers. In a town with as significant of a population in poverty, that is probably a pretty sizable number. Next up lop off the extremes of the age brackets in the very young, and mostly likely, the very old. Then there is probably a little statistical duplicity to be factored in, such as two people using the same computer, which is probably offset by one person who accesses on two different computers (work and home) such as myself.

What does all of that babble mean?

We are hitting a pretty sizable portion of our target audience. Even if it isn't directly from reading here, the people that are reading here are most likely taking bits of information back to other people they know to talk about. My biggest goals of becoming a source of community education and an open discussion area are being realized, I believe.

If you all enjoy the site, by all means pass it on. I have always fully believed that word of mouth promotion is WAY more effective in a site like this, versus anything else. A person is much more likely to try something a friend recommends, versus a random piece of advertising or the like. It has never been my policy to try to impose passing the site along to anyone. I want to have it happen naturally, not artificially. I think it breeds a better environment here.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik May 14 2008, 11:53 AM

What can be more natural than mass-Emailing???

Posted by: southsider2k7 Jun 17 2008, 09:39 AM

New updates...

In the last week and a half, we have had our two highest site view days with 255 and 269 unique viewers. We also had of the three busiest posting days ever during May with day registering 89, 85 and 78.

As I mentioned to someone else, "begging the question" does not mean that it demands the following question. It means that it does not answer the question. For a good, thorough discussion, go to

I cannot imagine a better site than this to discuss MC.

As we approach 20,000 posts, I wanted to update you on the site stats. I only went as far back as the first of this year. If you're interested in older stats, you can view the anniversary thread ( http://www.citybythelake.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=986&hl=anniversary ).

So far, this year we have had 29 new members register with the most new members of 6 registering on April 1st (hmmm......)

Our biggest posting day was Jan 21st with 84 posts.

It seems that 8 new topics are the max we will get in one day, but there were a total of 5 days this year when 8 new topics were started: Jan 8th, Feb 23rd, Mar 11th, Mar 24th, and April 2nd (yesterdaayyy....)

Yes. There are 10 times more people registered with the FB page, and the volumes dwarf anything ever seen on the webpage. Almost all posts on the facebook page receive 1000-1500 views. Many receive a lot more. Some pictures get up over 10,000 views.
