POST-TRIBUNE STAFF REPORT

Thanks to work progressing faster than expected on its catenary wire modernization program, the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District has canceled one of six remaining scheduled service outages.

Marketing director John Parsons said service will not be suspended between the Gary Metro station and South Bend for the weekend of Aug. 7-9, the weekend of Lollapalooza in Chicago and the Michigan City Great Lakes Super Boat Grand Prix.

Parsons said the South Shore will operate its regular weekend schedule between Gary and Chicago then, and there will be no shuttle bus service between South Bend and Gary.

Other outages for Aug. 28-30, Sept. 18-20, Oct. 2-4, Oct. 23-25, and Nov. 6-8 remain in effect.

He said the first outage was chosen because of the major events taking place that weekend.

During the outage, Amtrak will stop three additional "Wolverine" trains in Michigan City to provide service into Chicago, but reservations are required.

Visit www.Amtrak.com or call (800) 872-7245.

NICTD is in the middle of an $18 million, three-year project to modernize overhead wires that date back as far as the 1920s to eliminate failures that are the line's leading cause of service disruptions.
