MICHIGAN CITY — An unidentified man entered Michigan City's city hall at about 3:15 p.m. Monday carrying a baseball bat and used it to break out the entry doors on both sides of the facility.

No one was injured. The suspect was arrested within minutes by Michigan City police officers who responded to a 911 call from City Hall.

Nearly all the glass was broken in the double window doors on both sides of the building that are used as the entrances to city hall. The safety glass shattered and piled both inside and outside of the doors as city hall workers gathered in the center of the building.

Michigan City Police Chief of Operations Tim Richardson said prior to the city hall incident, the suspect is believed to have damaged the Lucky Stop store on Franklin Street.

The suspect then traveled to city hall by car carrying the baseball bat and randomly started breaking windows out of the doors to city hall. Police believe he also struck the elevator doors with the bat, and knocked over trash cans in the central area of city hall.

The suspect was confronted by Michigan City Mayor Ron Meer, who took a baseball bat that he had in his office and approached the suspect, telling him to put down the bat. When police arrived, they told the suspect to drop the bat and when he refused to cooperate, the suspect was tasered.

He was then taken into custody and taken to the Michigan City Police Department, which is next door to city hall.

Both entrances to city hall were cordoned off with police tape and city workers were cleaning up and working to replace the glass within the hour.

Police: Man arrested after breaking glass doors with baseball bat at city hall

MICHIGAN CITY | A Michigan City man was arrested Monday afternoon after police said he smashed the glass out of the doors at City Hall.

Police answering a 911 call at about 3:15 p.m. found Matthew Allen Wolferd, 28, of 311 Greenwood Ave., Michigan City armed with a baseball bat breaking both the inner and outer north and south door entrances to City Hall.

Police said he entered no offices and no employees were approached or injured.

Wolferd faces charges of criminal mischief — a Class C felony, and disorderly conduct — a Class B misdemeanor.

Police did not give a motive for the vandalism. The case remains under investigation.

Not sure I would call this "heroic". If this guy was crazy enough to attack city hall with a baseball bat he could have been crazy enough to be carrying a gun. It turned out well so that's great, but perhaps it would have be wiser - and safer - for Mayor Meer to simply call the police and let them do their job, instead of trying to do it for them with a baseball bat.

Well yea, they have to drive all the way around the block. Probably would get there faster if they walked.

Did they walk or drive?

MICHIGAN CITY, IND.--The front doors to Michigan City's City Hall are waiting for new windows after a man took a baseball bat to 13 glass doors on Monday afternoon.

Twenty-eight year old Matthew Wolferd caused close to six thousand dollars in damage when he parked his car at the building's south entrance and then proceeded to break all of the glass at both entrances.

Officers were on their way to investigate a similar incident at a gas station nearby – when they had to turn around.

“We started receiving calls from City Hall right next door to the Michigan City police station regarding a male suspect breaking out windows at this location," said Royce Williams, chief of services with the Michigan City police department. Police suspect Wolferd committed both acts within a ten-minute window.

Workers in the building instantly heard Wolferd's glass shattering and called 9-11. That’s when the man was greeted at the door by none other than the mayor.

"At that point i had been notified and confronted the individual by the doors and told him to put the baseball bat down," said Mayor Ron Meer.

Mayor Meer brought out his own baseball bat- a gift that he had received upon first taking office. He grabbed it as defense in the off chance Wolferd turned his violence on him.

Officers arrived within minutes and Wolferd resisted arrest, leaving officers no choice but to tase him before handcuffing. Police still aren’t sure what provoked Wolferd’s outburst.

“Subsequent after his arrest he was brought to the Michigan City police department, charged accordingly, and when he was spoken to he invoked his rights to remain silent so at this juncture we have not spoken to him,” said Williams.

Mayor Meer says he’s thankful that no one was hurt and that police were able to get there just in time.

“We do have our surveillance cameras here, we do have our panic buttons- I don’t really know much more than having a one-minute police response if you can do much better than that," said Meer.

The story I'm hearing is that Matt Wolferd's father is a city employee and owns a local eatery and is also a good friend of the owner of Lucky Stop.

Apparently Matt Wolferd had an argument with his father and decided to "get even" with his father and dishonor him by attacking his father's associates. He had allegedly smashed all the windows on his father's car as well.

Fortunately the clerk at Lucky Stop was able to lock the door to the store before he was able to get inside, he then left Lucky Stop and headed to City Hall.

I was told the entire Wolferd family has anger management issues.

Man pleads not guilty to Michigan City town hall vandalism

A Michigan City man says he is not guilty after he allegedly used a baseball bat to break out the glass at the Michigan City Town Hall.

It happened back on October 1, according to the News Dispatch.

Matthew Wolferd, 28, was arrested on two counts of criminal mischief and one count of resisting law enforcement.

His next hearing is set for 8:30 a.m. on December 6.

Damage is estimated to cost $5,000-$8,000.

City officials say they may now upgrade the doors to increase safety.
