Boulevard home to be razed

By Amanda Haverstick, The News-Dispatch

A Michigan Boulevard house damaged in an early February fire will be razed.

The two-flat structure at 1110 E. Michigan Blvd. caught fire shortly before 5:30 a.m. Feb. 1. The blaze was determined to be intentionally set since the home had no working utilities at the time.

“A new owner has purchased that building and will voluntarily demolish it within the next 30 to 45 days,” Zoning Administrator Joe Siegel said.

Also Monday, the board granted the new owners of 128 Green St. time to start repairs to the house. The property was brought before the board April 16 for an order to repair.

“Since that time, prospective new owners have provided an estimate for repairs, including structural, mechanical, exterior work,” Siegel said. “The department would recommend a reasonable time for these new owners to get started.”

Siegel said a notice to bidders has been sent out to raze a house at 109 Combs St. The board voted in April to demolish the site, which was damaged by a fire about six months ago.

In other business, the board approved a number of spring and summer events. It:

€ Approved closing Elston Street to Wabash Street down Barker Avenue for the Soap Box Derby test run from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Closing the same route for the derby from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 19 also was approved.

€ Issued a parade permit for the Memorial Day parade at 10 a.m. May 28. The parade will line up at May and Washington streets, cross Franklin Street to Decatur Street to Greenwood Cemetery. A short program will follow at the Grand Army of the Republic monument.

€ Approved a Michigan City Mainstreet Association trunk sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 23 in the 700 and 800 blocks of Franklin Square.

€ Approved the fourth annual Patch/Harborside Picnic from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 11 at the former Harborside Homes.
