MICHIGAN CITY — Police announced Thursday they have identified a suspect in the April 29 shooting of Papa John’s pizza delivery driver Randy Salat.

Police are seeking David Alan Hiner, 17, whose whereabouts are unknown at this time. Police said he should be considered armed and dangerous.

Hiner is black, 5-feet, 7-inches tall, and 200 pounds. His last known address was 263 Pinetree Court, Unit 13.

Police obtained warrants naming Hiner on charges of class A felony robbery and class B felony battery after a probable cause hearing before La Porte Superior Court 1 Judge Kathleen Lang on May 20, where Chief Deputy Prosecutor Atley Price presented evidence.

Hiner was identified as a suspect in the case after an extensive investigation by Detective Cpl. Ken Drake, with assistance from Detective Cpl. Al Bush, announced Detective Commander Lt. Sue Harrison.

Due to the nature of the charges, Hiner was automatically waived to adult court.

At 9:50 p.m. April 29, police were dispatched to St. Anthony Memorial about a shooting victim. Upon arrival at the hospital, officers saw emergency room staff tending to Salat, who had fallen on the pavement near the emergency room entrance doors. He was quickly taken into the hospital for treatment.

Salat, a delivery driver for Papa John’s Pizza, had driven himself to the hospital to seek help after being shot. He had been at Woodland Avenue and Michigan Boulevard delivering pizzas when the robbery and shooting took place.

Hiner has been added to the Michigan City Police Department’s Top 10 Most Wanted. Anyone with information on Hiner’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Michigan City Police Department at (219) 874-3221 or the Crime Tip Hotline (219) 873-1488.
