Boy declares intention to seek another term with council

By Jason Miller, The News-Dispatch

During his last meeting as the Michigan City Common Council's attorney, new LaPorte County Circuit Court Judge Tom Alevizos summed up the job done by Fourth Ward City Councilwoman Pat Boy in her first term on the board with a simple phrase: “When Pat Boy speaks, the Coast Guard listens,” he said.

Alevizos was referring to Boy's vehement objection to the U.S. Coast Guard's plan to use Lake Michigan for live-fire drills, and the Coast Guard's later scuttling of the plan.

In announcing this week she plans to seek a second term on the council, Boy credited other local and Great Lakes officials for stopping the plan.

She said, though, that successful efforts like her opposition to the Coast Guard plan are what make her want to keep serving.

“It does make it kind of exciting when you can actually send a message that the people of Michigan City don't want it, and it works,” she said Tuesday. “I admit that it makes it worthwhile.”

Boy said she wants to stay on the council so she can follow through on commitments and programs she started during her first term, chief among them a youth council she introduced in hopes of familiarizing area students with government.

The council has yet to really take off, she said, but is something she has dedicated a large chunk of time to.

“I really want to see them get involved in things like Park Board and other boards and departments,” she said. “Instead of just doing surveys and learning through books, they can get actual feedback through this, and I think that's important.”

Boy serves as council appointee to the fire merit and police merit commissions, the tree board - for which Boy, known as an avid environmentalist, drafted a new tree ordinance for the city - the plan commission, the code review board, the committee to select an attorney, the county plan steering committee and the contract negotiations committee.

Boy said Tuesday she wants to create citizens advisory committees for city departments like the plan commission and zoning board. She hopes the committees will bring more positives out of a community that tends to focus on what it doesn't want instead of what it does want.

“It would be good for people to come out and show the direction in which they'd like the city to go instead of just telling us what they don't want,” Boy said. “I don't think most people think they can come to meetings and say what they'd like to see.”
