Part of Calumet Trail Temporarily Closed Through October

Region residents are reminded that a four-and-a-half mile section of the Calumet Trail adjacent to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in Porter County is closed until the end of October so Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) can replace and upgrade an underground natural gas line. The temporary closure affects the part from East State Park Boundary Road to Mineral Springs Road. The pedestrian crossing from the South Shore Dune Park Station to the Indiana Dunes State park remains open, but is within the construction work zone. NIPSCO says the new natural gas line is being installed to provide safer and more reliable service to area residents and businesses in the future.

Once that work is complete, upgrades to the Calumet Trail are planned that include raising and paving the trail between Mineral Springs Road to just past the South Shore Dune State Park station. Officials say significant funding from the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) and the Regional Development Authority (RDA) make these upgrades possible and work may begin as early as 2018.
