saw this at nwi.com. Guess we'll have to wait for a day or three for a local report from the N-dispatch or H-argus.

Actually I believe there were articles in both local papers 2 or 3 weeks ago when 2 fishermen reported seeing the reptile.

Yes and no, Mr. Harris ... those were rumors they were reporting. And the SB Trib had those 1st, by 48 hours. There's beeen zero follow up by the N-dispatch or H-argus. So something that happpened on Tuesday is 1st in nwi.com site. I'd betcha southbendtribune has it next. Maybe it'll be something the county paper(s)? can work on during the weekkend editions.

I read that in the Post yesterday morning. Dad and I had a laugh, but you would think that at least the H-A would carry it, with a warning not to swim in the lake till they caught the thing!

Am I the only one who's visualizing an alligator wrapped up in a copy of the News-Dispatch?

That paper isn't big enough to cover an alligator. Even one that's only 4 ft. long! laugh.gif

Alligator sighting confirmed in Pine Lake
DNR official urges those who see it to contact authorities

Stan Maddux
For The News-Dispatch

LA PORTE - Two fishermen screaming for help led police to Pine Lake where officers spotted an alligator in what's the first confirmed sighting.

"It was no bigger than 4-foot long," said La Porte police officer Matthew Drangmeister, who saw the reptile Wednesday.

Gene Davis, Indiana Department of Natural Resources conservation officer, said, "It possibly could hurt someone, but being a wild animal its desire is to stay away from people as much as it can."

Officers at about 10 p.m. Tuesday responded to Pine Lake near the channel. Two fishermen were on a floating platform with hooks in the water about 20 feet off shore when they spotted the alligator swimming.

The water was only knee deep, but the men refused to get back in the water and wade toward shore. Their screams caught the attention of a passing motorist who contacted authorities, who shined flashlights on the water as the men walked to shore.

"They said they seen the alligator and got scared and was not going to walk back through the water to shore without our presence there to make sure the alligator didn't attack them," Drangmeister said.

Police didn't see the alligator at that time.

The next morning, Drangmeister, out of curiosity, returned about sunrise and spotted the reptile in about the same area. The alligator was about 200 yards off shore and also was seen by officer Chae Uhlemann, who "positively identified it as an alligator," Drangmeister said.

"Every three minutes it would go under for 30 seconds and come back up," he said. "Everytime it surfaced, you could see its back and head."

Within minutes, Drangmeister said the alligator disappeared, swimming to the other side of the shore.

An alligator sighting was first reported June 1 by fisherman near the channel. Ever since, Davis said DNR officers during the course of their regular duties are looking harder along the shoreline and using binoculars to try and spot the reptile.

Since Pine Lake covers 300 acres, Davis said the best chance of catching it might rest with someone who happens to see it and quickly contacts the authorities, who could come out with a net or noose.

"In a lake this size," Davis said, "trying to find it, it's going to be virtually impossible."

At Gracie's Bait Store, 1350 Pine Lake Road, some customers are expressing some degree of fear.

"They're feeling like it's not safe. They're worried about their children if they're out in the water," said Gracie Dickey, owner of the bait shop.

Some of her other customers, though, are making jokes and inquiring if she has any bait to catch the animal.

"I don't think it would go for any of my night crawlers," Dickey said.
