City by the Lake.org, The Voice of Michigan City, Indiana _ City Living _ The 48-Hour Turnaround Quiz!

Posted by: Tim Aug 4 2008, 04:14 PM

Our other quiz keeps dying - so I'm starting a new one. Only one rule - if a question goes more than 48 hours you must provide the answer so the quiz doesn't get bogged down - which is what keeps happening to the other one. You can ask a question while another question is being asked - you can ask your question again. If your question gets lost in other questions you can ask it again. Okay? I'll start!

Where was Albano's located before they moved to their present location?

PS No idea how this will work - and I'm not suggesting a boycott of the other quiz. It sits there for days, and I have a feeling some of us would like to play this game a little quicker. Play both!

No idea where the 1700 block of Franklin is. I think you're close - or even right - but since you bluffed/guessed about the old M&M location - and failed - I think you're still guessing. What was the business directly south of the old Albano's, Rog old buddy?

My question:

Marquette Theater had a balcony? Really? My band actually played there once - and I vividly remember looking out from the stage - no balcony. However, you may be right - can you jog my memory on that?

If the Marquette theater indeed had a balcony, which other MC theater had a balcony?

Correct on The Lido. I remember when Deep Throat appeared there - no, of course I didn't go. But my dad, who was mayor at the time, had it banned. My sister and I were all up in his.... stuff about people's rights. He was like "People have a right to go to a different city to see it." *rolls eyes*

First perm. resident - Isaac. C. Elston - though that's a WAG.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Aug 6 2008, 07:42 AM

From Lido to Libido, eh?

Here is my 48-hour quiz question: How many railroad lines cross Michigan City from one side to the the other?

Posted by: Ang Aug 6 2008, 10:25 AM

Maybe it wasn't Marquette. That was a guess. I do remember going to the movie and sitting in the balcony, but I may have been wrong about which theater it was.

Wrong on the City's first permanent resident. Major Elston was the town founder, but he was not a "permanent resident" until later.

Any other takers? Here's a hint, he has the same surname as one of our CBTL members.

Easy - what year did the Red Devil basketball team win state?

Easy - who was their coach?

Bonus - one player on this team had a rabbit-inspired nickname. What was it?

QUOTE
History credits Samuel Miller of Chicago with being Michigan City's first permanent resident. A former trader, hotel keeper and member of the first board of commissioners when Cook County, Ill., was formed, he came here shortly after the war against Black Hawk and became Major Elston's agent. He also is known as the first merchant, first postmaster and first warehouseman in Michigan City. Miller first occupied a cabin where the Northern Indiana Public Service Co.'s generating station guard house now stands. He then built a handsome house in 1834 on Jernegan Hill, overlooking Eighth Street between Michigan Boulevard and Walker Street, for his bride, Emily Kimberly of this city.

Name the well known Michigan City Born and Breed architect who studied under Frank Lloyd Wridght and Mies Van Der Rohe. This person is still alive and his heritage goes back four or five generations in Michigan City. He was instrumental in the design of O'Hare Airport and the FBI Building in D.C along with a slew of other buildings. He no longer lives in town but still has a residence in M.C.

Actually, Gene Simmons is the former MCPD Chief. And Rob McFarland works for St. Andrew's Products-they sell sports apparel. MCHS has a huge contract with them for the Athletic Department and Rob is the rep.
Fred LaBorn did work Admin at MCAS but retired last year.

If you go in the Heritage Hall at MCHS, they still have all the life-sized cardboard cutouts of the team and Rob McFarland donated his letter jacket which is hanging in one of the "locker" displays, I believe.
All those guys grew up to be successful. I don't think there is one sad story out of the bunch.

Thanks for the correction on the Gipson boys Michele. But, as for Rob, he told me he played on that team during the winning game. He said he did when he gave me his jacket to put in Heritage Hall. He even talked about about it like he was there. And if Gene Simmons graduated in '64, why is he in the picture?

Nope. Jim's Fiesta Villa had two stores. One in the Park N' Shop on Franklin and the other was where Movie Gallery is on 20 and Woodland.

2. Stu McDonnell had a show every morning, broadcast at the time people would wake up. What was it called?

Posted by: southyards Sep 1 2008, 07:19 AM

Well, perhaps someone can remember the names of the three movie theaters that used to be downtown, on Franklin Street. I remember paying 10-cents to get in. After the show was over, they had contests on stage for the kids, with prizes for winners. Bonus question for extra points: which one was destroyed by a fire?

The hot dog stand (W & W Enterprises), which was in business for two or three summers, was on the S.W. corner of Lake Ave. & Lakeshore Drive, across from the store and right up against a sand dune. I think George Tadros eventually had a barber shop and I used to work with Phyllis when she was a secretary. One of my friends lived around the corner from the store in question & said that Jenny & Jake Stark used to come visit when they weren't at the store. Long time ago!! Name of the store? Dunno, but question is a good one. : - )

Posted by: Ang Sep 9 2008, 09:54 AM

I lived on Lake Ave in the early 70's. I don't remember a hotdog stand on the corner (I lived in the apartment building catty-corner from where you're talking about.) and LaCuisine was already on the other corner. There was also Les's Garage a little further south on Lake Ave. You could rent inner tubes from there and he sold penny candy. Les was always a formidable man and "didn't take no crap from no kids." We were always respectful at Les's Garage.

Posted by: southyards Sep 9 2008, 02:00 PM

The hot dog stand was there a few years before you lived on the corner. Back in the middle 60’s. (My cousins & I owned it). Wasn’t there more than two or three summers before “neighborhood expansion” caught up with it & it was gone. I do remember the garage you speak of. Good days back then – lots of beach parties without many worries. We used to close the hot dog stand in the evening and go water ski-ing. Now how smart was that? But I reckon I’m wandering off subject . . . . . what was the name of the store that originally started this thread? My friends that lived near it said they couldn’t remember seeing any name on it . . . . . . . I’m wondering if the restaurant that was also in that location was LaCuisine or Swingbelleys. . . . . Swingbelleys had two addresses in Michigan City (at two different times). One was at 103 S. Lake St., and the other was at 100 Washington St.

In the mall, in the early 70's there was a store along the Carson's corridor. It was located between Tilt and the bathrooms. Currently the Hair Salon (Regis?) is in that spot as well as that homemade gifts shop with sweathshirts and post cards (Chess King used to be there). It was some type of emporium that sold a mix-match of everything. Does anyone remember it and what the name might be?

The barber shop was either Herb's or Mike's. Used to have a barber shop across from Spaulding Hotel, I think. Guess I'll flip a coin and go with Mike's. The five and dime was Kinetz's (horrible speling, I know). Tax service drew a blank. : - (

Right on Keinetz's. The answers to the other two are hidden within the question.

OOOO-oooo-OOOO

I am undone . . . . . . maybe the barber shop was South Side Barber Shop? And the tax service name is ??.

I do remember paying 25-cents for a haircut when the barber shop was 'downtown'. 25 cents for haircut and 25 cent tip. 50-cents altogether. That's just about the tax on today's haircuts. . . . . . . . .

The Barber shop was South Franklin Barbers.

The tax prep company was TaxPrepCo! We were Miller Tax Service and we bought it in the early 80's.

That's correct!

The Glass House used to have billboards along 421 coming north from US 30. "Only 18 miles to The Glass House" - "Only 10 miles to The Glass House". I remember as a kid coming back from Ohio where my grandparents lived - we'd come up 421 from 30 - those signs said we were almost home.

Here's a quickie, and easy

Remember, from a time not all that long ago, a clever advertisement that appeared along the highways (I remember there was one near the Pines on US 12) . . .. the ad consisted of several small signs that were on posts and were spaced approx. a few dozen feet apart.
Background of sign was usually white and the letters were red. What product were they promoting with their nifty jingles? Here's one (a six-signer):

Does your husband / Misbehave / Grunt and grumble / Rant and rave / Shoot the brute some / Blank Blank

It's hard to see. but that picture is of a chicken in golf gear standing in the rough. I don't remember why it was called that - maybe it was chicken served on a bed of lettuce - have to ask my dad. We used to go to The Hickory Pit on Sundays after church - they had a killer grilled cheese and fries thing I much preferred over chicken.

I blew that sign up a little bit and there it is! Chicken In The Rough. A little hard to see - but it's there!

The South Side Shopping Center? Is that what it's called now? It's not the Park N' Shop anymore? Maybe not - but I'm 53, grew up in Edgewood, and have no idea of the event you ask about.

Posted by: southyards Oct 11 2008, 02:11 AM

Only 53? I'm almost jealous! You can add a couple of Lustrums plus three years to that for me. Back in "the day" everyone called that shopping center the "South Side Shopping Center". There was basically a large field
there before the shopping center was built and for years, when the circus came to town, that's where it was set up. I lived along Franklin Street & used to get up early to watch the circus parade come down the road. Came in on the train and hoofed it, elephants and all, up Franklin Street, to the site. Then we'd go and watch them putting up the big tents the old fashioned way - elephants and roustabouts. Sometimes we'd help out with some small chores and get free admission. That was before Edgewood was really built up very much - good squirrel hunting woods and a good fishing pond back in there, by Barker School.

My earliest memory of the Park N' Shop is from about '59 - I never knew it to be called anything else. Growing up in Edgewood, we went there all the time. No idea a circus used to be there - but what exactly is a roustabout?

When it was discovered that the clean sands of Hoosier Slide were useful for glassmaking, the huge dune began to be mined away. Dock workers loaded the sand into railroad cars with shovel and wheelbarrow to be shipped to glassmakers in the U. S. and Mexico. Much of the sand also went to Chicago in the 1890's as fill for Jackson Park and for the Illinois Central RR right-of-way. Over a period of 30 years, from about 1890 to 1920, 13 1/2 million tons of sand were shipped from Hoosier Slide until the great dune was leveled and , chances are, little, if any, of it was moved via the Monon. The sauce is not the same--it is a lower grade. The sausage is definitely not the same--and I do not mean better. The cheese has more filler; you can tell because there is no or very little oil on top when it is cooked.

On another pizza note, I have heard that at Charlies, the Shaia have gone back to the old pizzas like Charlie the former proprietor made.

When I was young we lived across the street from Mr. Pytynia. And I do remember my mom telling me that he used to play Santa every year. Mr. Pytynia was the neatest old guy and a really great neighbor. At halloween he would have special goody bags for all the kids that lived on my block with double the candy that he gave every other kid.
Aahhh....
May he rest in peace.

My dad was good friends with Mr. Pytynia and we were fortunate to have him come to our house every Christmas eve to give us presents my parents would put into a Christmas bag. We used to know there were fake Santas but believe Pytynia was the REAL Santa. I still remember my shock when I went out onto the front porch one Christmas eve before Santa came and found the bag with presents. Many years later my brother used that same canvas bag to haul his dirty laundry home from college. Talk about a huge career fall from Santas special bag to laundry bag.

I also remember Mr. Pytynia would give me baseballs he would find at his job of maintaining the old Ames Field. Those balls were scuffed and water logged but I thought they were just about the best things in the world. What a great man.
