QUOTE MICHIGAN CITY — Vandals are targeting the Michigan City pier. The most recent was a few days ago when all the life rings were removed from their stations and thrown into the lake. Law enforcement recovered and reinstalled half of the rings. They hope to install the rest as beach goers fill the shore this Memorial Day weekend. Police are saying someone may drown if this happens again. |

QUOTE Flotation devices recently placed along the pier here have been getting tossed into Lake Michigan, but not to rescue anyone. The city is in the process of installing alarms to try and deter future acts of vandalism. Video surveillance could be next. Each life ring is fastened to 100 feet of rope and kept inside a hard plastic box, available to grab and throw should anyone fall off the pier into Trail Creek or get caught in an undercurrent at Washington Park beach. They were set out late in the summer season last year after two boys and an adult were pulled out of the water. One or two of the life rings have been flung into the waters since, said officials, but more recently all 11 of the flotation devices along the west side of the lighthouse pier wound up in the water. |
