This is the Citybythelake.org top 10 stories of 2015. Feel free to share and discuss! What should be different? What was missed?

10. A passing of the guard as notable Cityzens such as Bud Ruby, former Mayor Randy Miller, and long time coach, teacher, and athletic director Robert "Bear" Falls all passed away in 2015, amongst others.

9. There was another major budget shortfall in Michigan City this year led to a 4:30 pm on a Friday resignation by Controller Donna Pappas. The $5.5 million shortfall was filled with a combination of some cuts, and Riverboat funds being redistributed.

8. Michigan City's new branding study was released, producing the "Create. Play. Repeat." mantra.

7. Michigan City residents got a surprise property tax increase with the rate going up from a lowest in the state of Indiana rate of .3546 to .9887 for Michigan City Area Schools. The Indiana Department of Local Government Finance approved the increase to make up for falling assessments and unpaid taxes locally.

6. At the end of July St. Anthony and the City of Michigan City announced that the hospital will be building an entirely new facility just outside of the City limits with a goal of completing construction by 2017.

5. The new North Point Pavilion was opened to the public in August, replacing the old Jaycees stage In Washington Park. At a cost of $3.4 million the new facility includes picnic areas, bathrooms, showers, a restaurant, and a scenic observation deck with a view of the lake and lighthouse.

4. For the first time in 134 years (since 1871) there was a confirmed black bear sighting in Indiana. The bear spent the summer and fall wandering back and forth between Michigan City and the state of Michigan, fattening up for the winter and giving residents some unique picture opportunities. Attempts to trap the rare tourist and release him closer to traditional roaming grounds failed, and it is believed that he is hibernating somewhere in the area.

3. Mayor Ron Meer was elected to a second term by the narrowest margin of victory in a Michigan City Mayoral election in decades, defeating Republican candidate Ken Behrendt by less than 300 votes. Also notable was the election of 5th ward councilperson Sharon Carnes whose election saw not one, but two challenges; with one each in the primary and the general elections. Also of note is the fact that half of the ward council seats were filled by women, with victories by Candice Silvas (2nd), Pat Boy (4th), and Sharon Carnes (5th).

2. The Supreme Court twice heard cases involving official misconduct by local police and prosecutors staff as cases involving both Brian Taylor and John Larkin having conversations with their lawyers overheard by members of local police departments and LaPorte County prosecutors staff, ended up on the docket of the states highest court.

1. Big achievements in local sports saw the Marquette High School boys basketball team finish as State Runners up in the 1A division, along with a Success Factor promotion to 2A basketball for the 2015-2016, as well as Michigan City High School's Jasmine McLemore finishing as a state runner up in the 400 meter dash. Also competing the state track meet were MCHS's Daniel Armstrong, who finished 5th in the state in the high jump, Makiyah Smallwood, who competed in the 100m hurdles, the 300m hurdles, and the high jump at state finals, ShanQuan Hemphill who made state finals in the high jump and Matt Lockridge who made state finals in the 100 meter dash.
