Michigan City Senior Center to Receive Donation from Comcast

The Michigan City Senior Center will be presented with a check from the Comcast Cares Day Project on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at 10:00am at the Senior Center. Comcast Cares Day is Comcast's annual company-wide day of service in which tens of thousands of Comcast employees, along with their families and friends, volunteer in their local communities. Comcast works with existing local nonprofit organizations to positively impact each community served.

The project chosen for the Senior Center for the Comcast Cares Day was a handicap accessible ramp leading from the Senior Center parking lot down to the high water mark on the beach. The ramp enables those who are unable to walk through the sand to have accessibility to the beautiful scenic views of Lake Michigan. Several smaller scope projects were also selected including: 1) Clean up of the back patio and planting of the planter boxes. 2) Clearing out an area in the front of the Senior Center and planting flowers/landscaping in addition to planting flowers in the flower boxes out front. 3) Sweeping the sand back from the sidewalks so all sidewalks and handicap ramps are wheelchair accessible. 4) Clearing & planting some flowers in the areas at the entrance to our parking areas. In addition, the Washington Park Zoo was selected as an additional site for sweeping and planting to ensure there was enough work for all volunteers. Comcast Cares Day was held on Saturday, April 30, 2011. Financial credit was given for every volunteer that worked that day and there were 687 volunteers on the Senior Center project. Comcast Cares Day also awarded the Michigan City Senior Center an additional grant of $5,000 on behalf of Greg Gomolka, Government Affairs Manager of Comcast. This additional grant, called the Superstar Award, is given to a special volunteer who has shown great dedication to community service. Greg Gomolka will present the check to Senior Center Director Tara Miller along with representatives of the many volunteers instrumental in making this project a success.
