QUOTE Mom planning ceremony Published: Thursday, August 5, 2010 5:10 PM CDT MICHIGAN CITY — The mother of a Michigan City soldier returning from Iraq hopes to organize a welcoming ceremony for local service men and women returning from that battle zone. Karen Thompson, whose son, U.S. Army Sgt. Kevin Jirtle, served in Iraq, is aware of three soldiers returning from Iraq and one from Afghanistan. All Iraq combat forces are supposed to be returning to the United States, leaving a peacekeeping force, she said, and she wants to welcome them home. She hopes to get local businesses to put together gift baskets and is asking Mayor Chuck Oberlie to use the occasion to award the city’s Homeland Security Medals. She can be reached at (219) 809-1511. |
