MICHIGAN CITY — A Michigan City woman was in stable condition Thursday afternoon at Franciscan St. Anthony Health - Michigan City after being shot multiple times late Wednesday night near 11th and Lafayette streets.

Det. Cpl. Al Bush of the Michigan City Police Department is spearheading the investigation, which Police Chief Mark Swistek says is in its early stages.

“What led up to this shooting was an altercation between several female teenagers that eventually led to this particular shooting incident,” Swistek said. “We believe an earlier altercation led to this one that involved firearms,” noting that he does not believe the shooting was “a random act of violence.”

Police identified the lone victim as Brittany Kelley, 24, who resides in the 300 block of North Calumet in Michigan City.

An MCPD press release indicates several vehicles were seen pulling away from the area of 11th and Lafayette around 11:20 p.m. Wednesday, just moments before Swistek said a number of 911 calls were placed regarding the incident.

While no suspects have been arrested at this time, Swistek said some information has been released, but there are reluctant witnesses involved with the case.

“We have been told that there were a number of witnesses present at the time of the shooting,” he said.

Witnesses are urged to to contact Bush at (219) 874-3221 ext. 341.

Increased enforcement

Michigan City Police Chief Mark Swistek also said the police department will have “a strong presence” around the city over the Memorial Day weekend.

“We are going to utilize a lot of overtime hours to have a stronger presence throughout the neighborhoods and within Washington Park,” he said.

Michigan City woman shot three times
May 24, 2012 3:15 pm • By Stan Maddux Times Correspondent

MICHIGAN CITY | Police are investigating a late night shooting of a woman on Michigan City's north side.

Officers responded just after 11 p.m. Wednesday to Lafayette and 10th streets.

Michigan City Police Detective Sgt. Matt Barr said a 24-year-old woman was shot three times and tried running away but was unable to due to her injuries.

According to police, the events leading up to the shooting are still not clear, but they are classifying the shooting as an attempted murder.

Barr said it appears there was an altercation at another location between multiple females and the victim apparently was on foot when several vehicles arrived just before the gunfire.

The parties involved fled before officers arrived and surrounding residents were out of their homes inquiring about the gunfire, which makes it difficult to immediately know exactly how many people were involved in the shooting, Barr said.

"We're still a little fuzzy on how all of that came down," he said.

Nora Brown, 81, who lives just a few houses down from where the shooting occurred said she was awakened by gunfire.

She said she heard more than one shot but wasn't sure how many rounds were fired.

Brown said she has heard gunfire before in her 13 years living at the residence and did not get up to investigate what had taken place.

"I don't go to my windows when there are shots outside," Brown said.

The name of the victim and the location of her wounds were not disclosed.

Police said she was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Michigan City Police at (219) 874-3221 and asked for lead investigator, Detective Al Bush, at ext. 341.
