Downtown Michigan City pub, considered an anchor for area, closes

Stan Maddux Times Correspondent

MICHIGAN CITY — Ryan's Irish Pub packed them in even when the downtown was not.

One of the anchors in downtown Michigan City, it has shut its doors.

The bar at 401 Franklin St. has been sold to a man from Chicago who plans to renovate the three-story building and, perhaps, reopen since the liquor license was part of the purchase, Johnny Stimley said.

Stimley and his parents, John and Judy, were owners of the bar popular for its brews, burgers and appetizers.

"The food was good. The service was good. A lot of people went there," said Coleen Johnston, a regular customer since moving to the city recently from Valparaiso.

After a 25 years or so, Stimley said, his parents were still working there when the doors closed March 26 and wanted to retire.

"It's the time to do it, I guess," said Stimley, a member of the City Council.

Don Babcock, president of the city’s Redevelopment Commission, said from the beginning the establishment was a definite draw for the north end and recently added variety to similar establishments that opened downtown in recent years.

Babcock hopes its future use doesn’t change much.

"It did play a major role in the downtown, more or less anchoring the north end before you get to the library," he said.

Since the sale was done through Realtors and attorneys, Stimley said all he knows about the new owner is he is from Chicago, with plans to apparently serve food and drinks because the liquor license was part of the sale. Stimley didn’t know if there would be any name change but said the new ownership doesn’t plan to open until after the structure is renovated.

"They said they'd be closed for awhile," Stimley said.
