CHESTERTON — Fire Chief John Jarka is looking into quotes for services connected to the proposed baby drop-off box at the fire station along Broadway.

Reporting Monday to the Town Council, Jarka said he has spoken with the developer of the box and is seeking quotes from three alarm companies.

The fire chief also is looking into installation costs and the adequacy of the fire station as the host site. By law, the baby box must be in an inconspicuous location, but conspicuous to staff at the site.

As the state law that allows such boxes to be installed at fire departments and police stations does not take effect until July 1, Jarka cited “no rush” in the project, which could bring the second such baby box to Northwest Indiana.

The box at the Coolspring Township fire station, near Michigan City, has been used twice. The state currently has only two boxes for holding babies.

Michigan City is also considering baby boxes for some of its fire stations.
