La PORTE COUNTY — The deadline to file for the 2012 primary election passed Friday afternoon, leaving La Porte County with a number of contested primaries.

The one surprise is that incumbent County Recorder Johnny Stimley, who originally announced plans to seek re-election, removed his name from the ballot prior to the noon deadline Friday. Stimley told The News-Dispatch late Friday he will issue a statement soon as to his official reasons.

That leaves La Porte resident Suzanne Miller, a Republican, who will run unopposed in the primary, but face either Earl Cunningham, La Porte, Barbara Dean, La Porte, or Michael Bohacek, Michiana Shores, for county recorder in the general election.

In the county’s third district, current Michigan City Area Schools board member Dr. Vidya Kora will run unopposed for the county commissioner Democratic nomination, then face either Terry Garner, Hanna, or Ronald Kniola, Westville – both Republicans – in the general election.

Incumbent Commissioner Ken Layton did not appear on the ballot.

Another incumbent, District 2 Commissioner Barbara Huston, did appear. She will face David Decker, the former Westville Council president, for the Democratic slot, while the winner of that race will vie against the Republican winner, either Mitch Feikes or Sharon Kirkham, both of La Porte.

The most significant battle in terms of the number of candidates will come from the County Council At-Large Democratic race, where eight have filed for candidacy.

The top three votegetters between Matthew Bernacchi, La Porte, David Biela, Michigan City, Scott Ford, La Porte, Steve Holifield, La Porte, Lee Mumaw, La Porte, John Pappas, La Porte, Jeffrey Santana, Michigan City, and Lois Sosinski, La Porte, will run against Republicans Brad Mrozinski, Rolling Prairie, and Dan VanSchoyck, La Porte, in November’s general election.

The Republican party will have a chance to tap a third council candidate via a caucus held by party chairman Keith Harris prior to a July 3 deadline.

Additional Republican candidates could be added in the general election races for circuit court clerk, auditor, treasurer, coroner and surveyor.

“Both parties will have a chance to place candidates in open slots,” said Lynne Spevak, the current Circuit Court clerk who at this point stands unopposed in her re-election bid.

Spevak said candidates for federal and state elections, as well as the local election for judge of the Circuit Court, could be announced by as early as 10 days.

County Coroner John Sullivan is another Democratic candidate who at this point stands unopposed.

The primary battle for county auditor will come down to incumbent Craig Hinchman and challenger Joie Winski, a current Michigan City Redevelopment Commission member.

The Democratic primary for county treasurer will come down to a race between incumbent Nancy Hawkins, Michigan City, and challenger Pam Kieft, La Porte.

Incumbent Surveyor Tony Hendricks, Michigan City, will seek re-election against Robert Przybylinski, also of Michigan City, in the Democratic primary.

Elections for clerk-treasurer and town council At-Large in Pottawattomie Park have gone without nominations at this point.

State delegates for both major parties, as well as Republican precinct committeemen, will be available early next week, Spevak said.

Should a candidate choose to withdraw candidacy and ballot placement, he/she must complete a Primary Election Candidate Withdrawal by noon Monday, Feb. 13.

Indiana’s primary election is May 8.
