MICHIGAN CITY — This is the weekend for gallery hopping in Michigan City.

Specifically, this is the Summer of Art weekend in the Uptown Arts District.

Anneke Dekker, a Southern Shore Art Association board member and an organizer of the event, hopes guests will flock to the galleries and shops, from the Lubeznik Center for the Arts, 101 W. Second St., to More Than Decor, 1009 Franklin St.

The times are noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

The Lubeznik Center has an exhibit called “Text Messages: Transcriptions and Conversations,” while More Than Decor sells a variety of treasures and antiques, art, glassware and pottery.

Other participants are: Ryan’s Irish Pub, 401 Franklin St.; Revive Consignments Gallery, 523 Franklin St.; Walnut Ink Gallery, 624 Franklin St., where artist Chris Smith will discuss his work at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; Urban Soles, “an eclectic boutique,” 607 Franklin St.; Southern Shore Art Association gallery, 724 Franklin St., where visitors can wander two stories of space to see paintings, photography, 3-D art, fiber art and more; Prince Gallery, 726 Franklin St., to see “an eclectic collection of fine art; Lakeside Gallery West, 827 Franklin St., where the exhibit is “Oodles of Poodles.”

Chris Grohs, co-owner of Walnut Ink, is thrilled to be celebrating Summer of Art this weekend. He and others, including Hesham Khalil, Mainstreet Association president and owner of Global Engineering and Land Surveying, 601 Franklin St., say the presence of a vibrant art community is an asset for the community to treasure.

Dekker said the SSAA is grateful to Arnold Besse, owner of Prince Gallery.

“He is the chief sponsor of the Summer of Art,” she said.
