This is a great op-ed on the attempts of the few property owners trying to steal ownership of the beach away from everyone else. Reading their disgusting propaganda piece which included things such as busing non-residents into their precious beach as a scare tactic. *Gasp*, no anything but that!

It really makes me want to find a few hundred of my closest friends and go visit some of these beaches.

I lived in Long Beach from 57 to 80. Went to school there and graduated from Elston. I lived on the Beach side of Lake shore drive and "back in" at stop 27. I never considered the beach as private property nor did anyone else for that matter. There was one guy at stop 22 that would try to chase people he didn't recognize on "his beach". He is retired and moved away now.

Long Beach was founded in 1922, and it is my understanding that a "riparian rights" clause was written into the town charter. Riparian water rights exist in many jurisdictions with a common law heritage, such as Canada, Australia, and states in the eastern United States.
I do not know if this is so but I have been told that the town charter had some mention of access by members of the town of Long Beach.

Any way the courts seem to be siding with the long standing tradition that access is allowed by anyone and that the state holds claim to the beach from some high water mark reference. There are those from the great state of Illinois who believe otherwise.
