I want to give a special shoutout to Pee Wee Assistant Coach Kevin "Cookie" Woods, he's a really great coach for Michigan City, and a really nice, big hearted and emotional kind of guy and does a great job working with our young people. He's basically the team's defensive coordinator. I overheard some of the parents talking saying that after the game he took the loss yesterday really hard.
Also, last night when we go back to City I was showing Aryuan some of the video I shot, we were talking about how nice of a facility Eastern Michigan has and I was telling him about some of the other MAC colleges and some of the great players that had played in the MAC. He had confided in me that he would have much more preferred to have played in The Michigan Wolverine's "Big House" which is just a stones throw away in Ann Arbor. |

QUOTE Falling Just Short Lee Summit (Mo.) 6, Pee Wees 0 Nick Dettmann Staff Writer YPSILANTI, Mich. - This is the hardest part of coaching 11- and 12-year-old boys. After the Wolves' 6-0 loss to Lee Summit (Mo.) on Saturday morning at Eastern Michigan's Rynearson Stadium, City coach Craig Foerg lined up his players next to each other - shoulder to shoulder - and gave them their runnerup medals. As he put each medal around the kid's necks, he embraced them and said thank you for their hard work and effort. He did this 19 times. The look of sadness, disappointment and heartbreak on each of their faces made it harder as he went down the line. "Probably one of the most difficult things I've ever had to do," Foerg said. "I think of every one of these kids like they're my sons. I love them to death. I'd do anything for any one of them." The Titans, who are from the Kansas City area, scored a 1-yard touchdown run with nine seconds left to defeat the Wolves. The loss sends the Wolves home for the season, while the Titans advance to next week's Pop Warner Super Bowl in Orlando, Fla. "It just wasn't our day," Foerg said. "Not much else that you can do." Foerg told his boys after the painful medal ceremony to make sure he doesn't have to do this again. Instead, next time around, he wants to hang a champion medal around their necks - not the runner up one. Last year, these Wolves lost in the sub-regional. So Foerg is banking that two straight years of disappointment to get so far but come just short sticks with them. Plans for next year are already underway. "We knew how good we were," Foerg said. "Nobody else may have known it, but as a group, we knew how good we were and how hard our kids were willing to work. It wasn't a surprise to us as far as we made it. "... Next year our goal is going to be to make it all the way (to nationals). We've got another year or so together with these kids. ... I can't wait to see them back next year to go at it again." In the previous two games, the Wolves were a second-half team. They trailed Tri-Town three weeks ago at halftime, and trailed the Detroit Dolphins last week at the sub-regional. But both times, the Wolves rallied to win. On Saturday, it just never got going. The Wolves (10-2) struggled to move the ball all game long. The Titans struggled just as much. "It was just two really good defenses playing," Foerg said. "Our defense played phenomenal today. Offense tried their hearts out." The game-winning drive began with 6:05 remaining in the fourth quarter on City's 49-yard line. It started after a blocked punt by the Titans, who remain undefeated. It was all running plays - 13 of them. But only two of them were dives up the middle. Most were sweeps around the right or around the left side of the line. And the Titans came up huge throughout the drive. Twice they converted on 3rd-and-4 and converted a 4th-and-3. As the clock wound under a minute remaining, the Titans had a 2nd-and-1 at the City 6. And with two timeouts, the clock continued to run. "We wanted to save one for after the kickoff," Foerg said. The Titans got to the 1 with 14 seconds left, and scored the game-winner with a 1-yard plunge around the left tackle for the score. The Wolves got the ball back with eight seconds left. They tried a trick pass play which fell incomplete, and had the last pass attempt with three seconds left get intercepted. "We have a great group of kids," Foerg said. "They were focused all week. We had a good week of practice. To sum it up, today wasn't our day. ... Somebody had to win and it wasn't us." While the Wolves are leaving with what they had hoped for - a trip to Florida - they are proud of their remarkable season and wish their fellow Junior Pee Wees the best of luck. "It's amazing," Foerg said. "We couldn't be happier. It's a great feeling. "... For the whole community, I think it's going to excite them; help inspire Michigan City football, bringing them back to where they need to be and that is at the top."
