MICHIGAN CITY — By summer’s end, Franklin Square between Fourth and Ninth streets, as well as each side of the 100 block of Franklin Street, will be paved.

“It needs it,” City Planner John Pugh said. “The streets now are in bad shape.”

Final approval for pavement arrived at Monday’s Redevelopment Commission meeting, with the time frame set by Rieth-Riley Construction, the city’s winning contractor for paving in 2011.

“We’d like to get it done as soon as possible,” Pugh said. “It will be dependent on their schedule.”

The city is still checking with the contractor as to when the paving will begin, but Pugh says it will not conflict with the weekend of Aug. 6.

The Michigan City Mainstreet Association has its Taste of Michigan City and a boat parade planned for that weekend, which marks the 2011 Great Lakes Grand Prix.

Pugh said the project either will be completed in full by Aug. 6 or not begun until after the events of that weekend.

“It’s a good project, and we are really thankful to get a good bid price,” he said. “It was extremely low, and we knew we had to take advantage.”

The rate Rieth-Riley won the bid for was $51 per ton for resurfacing, and 90 cents a square yard per 11⁄2 inch depth milling.
