I saw a rumor on facebook that Jewel and Osco are closing. Anyone have any information on it? I read where the parent company, Super Valu, is closing some suburban stores and focusing on neighborhood stores in the more urban areas. Super Valu is also focusing on building more of their Save-A-Lot stores with five stores opening this summer on the south side of Chicago. I have not read anything regarding the fate of the Michigan City store. |

I have an email in to the corporate office to find out for sure. I have heard that the store is closing Oct. 8th Now I have also heard something about a buy-out. Hopefully these individuals will have jobs. When is Target and Kohl's coming in? I would have thought that they would be here by Christmas. |

I would have thought that they would be here by Christmas. The Kohl's operation won't be done until mid/late 2013 at the earliest. They haven't even started demolishing the old buildings yet. As I understood it, that was the plan all along. |

Jewel has been in Michigan City my entire life, I can't imagine City without one......
When I was a kid, we lived by Jewel when it was next to Ames. I would walk over there, get a cart, take it home and fill it with pop bottles, push it back, cash in the bottles and buy milk and bread. If any money was left over, I got to buy a candy bar for myself and bring the change home to mom. Time marches on. *sigh* Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind~Dr. Suess

Well, the closing of Jewel will probably breath a little bit of life into the Al's store on Franklin St. Perhaps Al's will be able to hang on a bit longer with Jewel out of the equation.

I love when companies say this -
"Our number one goal is customer satisfaction " Really? So it's like saying - "Hi there, loyal customer. You've shopped here, and spent your money here, since the 60's. You've come to depend on us for your family's needs. So since your satisfaction is our number one goal we're CLOSING THE STORE!" Do they seriously think anyone buys that bullshxt? |

Do they seriously think anyone buys that bullshxt? I seen the writing on the wall for that store about a year ago when Jewel sold out the gas station and mini mart in front of the store. My cousin Donella was the MC Jewel-Osco store manager for years and she was transferred to a store in Hammond near Horseshore Casino area at that time. They've tried other promotions to try to get people to shop there like having Denis Savard signing autographs at their grad re-opening a couple years ago. The Michigan City Economic Development folks should try to attract another Northwest Indiana or South Bend regional Supermarket Chain in that building, like a Martin's Supermarket, Town & Country Market, Strack & Van Til's or WiseWay. |

Jewel's pet answer to your complaint is pretty much, "It is with heavy hearts that we had to come to the decision to close our Michigan City location. Please come see us at our store 15 minutes away in Chesterton on Indian Boundry Rd." MC does not need another grocery store. The "pie" is too small to support another store. |

For anyone that shops for their family (and is aware of and/or pays attention to prices), Jewel was RIDICULOUSLY overpriced. Occasionally, they'd have a great sale on meat, produce or pop, but for that, you have to have their preferred card... you can't just get the sale price.
My hubby and I always joked that Jewel was here in MC to make the Chicago people feel like they were at home... high prices. Although the store was almost always well presented, their pricing left a lot to be desired. . . . . . |
