Michigan City has had four murders in three months. If that keeps up, that works out to 16 murders a year. For a city with 31,479 residents, that is a murder rate of 50 per 100,000.

That puts Michigan City just behind #1 (St. Louis at 66 per 100,000). And well over Chicago (at 24.1) or Detroit (at 39.8).

Good job, Mayor Meer! Good job, Michigan City Police Department!

I am not sure if JR Schwartz is a citizen of Michigan City, but I am, and I will stand up to no-nothing bullies who propagate untrue statements in order to score political points for divisive end.

The murders that have occurred are a tragedy for those related to the dead individuals, their friends, the community at large, and especially the public safety professionals that have to deal with all of this. The police do get paid for this, so no excuses, but they are no way, shape or form responsible for acts of violence or any crime - they are just the men and women who signed up to clean it up for us (which I suspect JR Schwarz and his ilk, are not). We ought to feel sorry for these individuals, and the court system that is now burdened with dealing with the "perps", which, if you knew, are high school students (in two cases) and a person likely to be suffering from mental health issues (perhaps untreated due to cost and availability?). How sad is that? As a community we cry together, pray for the victims, forgive the perps (but not exonerate - big difference) and try to tighten our bonds tighter to prevent further tragedy.

Your 'cheap shot" at our Mayor is especially abhorrent and disgusting - not because I voted for the guy (I did), and will vote for him again (I will), but for your tawdry linkage as if to assign blame. Shame on you and everyone who thinks like you! Mayor Meer is one of the kindest, honest, honorable men in our world - if you don't so, next snow storm, look for his truck out on our streets helping! - and I will defend him against cheap shot artists like you any chance I get.

I hope readers will join me in condemning this type of attack and do their very best to vote in individuals like Mayor Meer, and keep the loud mouth, corrupt, lying, cynical "candidates" out of office.

I am certainly for less murder but your methodology leads me to believe that you are a partisan. If you can extrapolate such a small sample size into something meaningful, good luck! If you're a partisan, then just say "There was a murder the other day. That averages out to 365 murders a year! What is the opposing party doing?"

I certainly won't condemn the mayor for the spike in homicides over the past 10 months or so but your praise of him is just as biased in the other direction leading me to believe you have some connection to his campaign, are employed by or have contracts with the city. Afterall, the mayor and his chief of police made the decision to cut the police force by 9 officers in order for raises to be given which was absurd. If they are heroes when crime is low then they have to be held accountable when it's high. Michigan City has been notoriously more crime ridden throughout history than similar sized cities like Valpo, Portage and La Porte. We have gangs and drug dealers connected to Chicago and Gary that largely influence crime in the city. It's not random or shocking when all the conditions to lead to violence like low paying jobs, segregation, dilapidated housing stock, a relatively poor educational system, cutting back police personnel, and politicians catering to tourism all continue to plague the city.

I have to think of all the millions being spent on a roundabout for the beach, a new pavilion, Bismark Hill, a bridge makeover, a plaza and the countless studies while our neighborhoods suffer from severe disinvestment. These are the things Meer never mentions while he's busy bragging on his successes of allegedly turning Michigan City into Naperville.

I agree with Hypnotic. You can't really blame the Mayor for a person with a mental disorder murdering people, but you can lay some of the blame on the Mayor and the Council for the increasing unemployment rate, especially when the rest of the country has the lowest rate in 50 years. Our Council and Mayor need to be finding and offering incentives to get new industry jobs into our community. But instead, what is our council talking about? Going no smoking at parks and beaches. What? Hello, is anyone in there? How about a tax incentive to whoever wants to start making something at the old wiper blade building again? How about 10 year property tax free to a business that buys and starts a business in one of the downtown dilapidated building? How about advertising it? Are we still earning less than 0.5% on our municipal cash accounts or did someone with some financial wisdom finally invest in a high interest bearing account like at least >2%. Thos accounts are out there. Just tell Horizon to start paying higher interest or take the business somewhere else. Make a deal. Did anyone look into that or is it business as usual? The Mayor is good at making improvements to the City landscape, but that will not sustain us at people don't have jobs and end up leaving the City.

I am not connected with any campaign. I do not have any contracts with the City. I am a citizen - that's it.

I work for a local manufacturer, and you have no clue - there is no one in this county or neighboring counties that cannot find a job somewhere close by. The latest stats show about 2000 ppl in the county drawing unemployment - those folks are not looking for jobs as they say, they are collecting. People are dropping off the roles because it is cheaper to do your own child care than to pay for it, you can now almost live on one wage, and there is quite a pick of jobs to choose from now. People do not want manual labor jobs. Obviously you have no idea what is really happening in small scale manufacturing in the area.

As far as your comment on interest rates, there is no control over this whatsoever. They keep the money local to support the local bank - duh! One (big) reason for the hot economy is low interest rates (perhaps artificially), so us savers, like the city, gets paid nothing for saving.

And why are you against smoking at the parks and beaches? Ok to blow smoke into a child's face? There are plenty of bars violating the law for you to smoke in. Public areas are for everyone and we have the right to breath fresh air.

MC Economic Development is constantly, every day, working to get those buildings filled - I know, they call our company probably monthly! The deals are great - but who, exactly, is going to take a small manufacturing job at $9 or $10/hour when McD's/Family Ex pays $13? And we need dozens of these folks, not one or two. Get a clue!

Now, back to the issue - first of all Valpo = 37k, Laporte 21k and Portage 36k ppl; MC = 29k and declining. The biggest group growing is seniors; the biggest group declining is 18-35 educated. Why? Lack of high paying jobs! Crime is down; elimination of officers on duty has no relationship to crime - use graduation rates (which are up big time), employment (comparatively, numbers are historically very good) and all sorts of other good news. What we need is exactly what we are doing - opportunities in education, park & rec improvements, good business climate and a solid government. Oh, BTW, I'm not from Naperville either, but plenty of my beach area neighbors are, and why shouldn't they want a place that looks just like home?

Condemnation of our wonderful city with no real data is just empty barrels making noise. Chiming in by people who vote against the next generation's needs just pushes the following generations further away from those areas of employment that would secure a family. We just need a few more people to open their eyes and vote before you can find a loophole so they can't.

Our schools are solid, our business climate is unreal good, our parks are outstanding and living here beats the crap out of most places on earth (including Valpo, Portage and yes Laporte). Do your own research. Maturity is about commitments and wisdom, not emotions.

Here's some data for you:
1. Highest deficits in human history by the current federal government - interest remains low
2. Highest concentration of wealth in USA as in most Latin American countries - on par with Guatemala now
3. Lowest union membership, supported by RTW which says some don't even have to pay for it (12% paid now)
4. Manufacturing jobs dipping below 20% of total employment in Indiana - first time ever

Your "data" is hilarious. There wasn't any. That really was funny. Since I "have no clue" and you are the most wise one (even though you made my point throughout your response), I will not waste my time responding or debating your points. Have a nice day.

What data are you refuting? Empty barrel indeed.

Here's another piece of data that Hoosier should be sickened by, fresh from the tape:

Soybeans hit lowest point in 50 years. The market is almost $2 below cost of production. Why? A silly trade war. I would remind you, the last trade war over silliness by an American President was over wheat. Markets never recovered. Vote accordingly, just like you did last time.
