La Porte County Dems, GOP elect new officers

From Staff Reports

LA PORTE - La Porte County Democrats and Republicans elected new officers Saturday.

At a 9 a.m. meeting of precinct committee chairs and vice chairs at La Porte County Complex, the Democrats elected: John Jones, La Porte County Democratic Party chairman; Barbara Huston, vice chairwoman; Willie Milsap, secretary; and Dot Decker, treasurer.

Separate votes were taken for each position. Running against the elected officials were: Duane Hogan, chairman; Dana Buell, vice chairman; Jim Stemmler, secretary; and Lauren Arnold, treasurer.

Jones said it was unusual to have two-way races for each of the positions, and said Democrats have been buoyed by the party's success in the national election.

Jones, 49, is among the younger group of county Democrats who are ready for some changes.

"Sometimes, there's been a loss of focus on where we go next," Jones said. "I want to take it to the next level and improve what we've got going."

He would like to see the party make greater use of technology and form a Young Democrats Association.

The Republicans gathered at 1 p.m. in the county complex to vote for party leaders.

In the only contested race, Keith Harris beat incumbent Coral Laun for the position of La Porte County Republic Party chairman. In the three uncontested elections, the precinct committee chairs and vice chairs elected Teresa Shuter as vice chairwoman, Roger L. Wolff as secretary and Terry Garner as treasurer.
