Local law enforcement in Michigan City spent the afternoon swatting out hunger.

The Fraternal Order of Police Dunes Lodge 75 in Michigan City teamed up area police and the Salvation Army for a food drive.

The kettles were manned Saturday by police personnel accepting cash donations and non-perishable food items.

Police handed out cups of chili for $1 or a donation of five cans of soup to help raise money.

“It helps provide food for the immediate families in the area that are out of work. Everyone is having a tough time this year so hopefully this will give them a hand,” an officer from FOP 75 said.

The Salvation Army provides meals for more than 2,000 families in the Michigan City area.
