QUOTE MICHIGAN CITY — The police officers have been named in the weekend officer-involved shooting at a Michigan City hospital. The two officers were working off-duty security at Franciscan Health in Michigan City just before 4 p.m. Saturday when they were called by the family of Thomas J. Walsh III, 46, of Michigan City, who was refusing to leave his pick up truck in the hospital parking lot to seek medical assistance. A preliminary investigation by the Indiana State Police indicated Walsh drew a handgun from within the truck and pointed it at Sgt. Ken Havlin, a 30-year veteran of the department, who was standing by the driver's side door. Officer Charles Henderson, a 20-year veteran, who was standing on the passenger side, pulled his weapon and shot Walsh four times in fear of injury or death to Havlin, according to a press release from the Indiana State Police Tuesday. Walsh, who was airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, remains in critical condition. |
