Michigan City Mayor Asked to Resign Over Alleged Racial Comments
Posted today at 10:08am by Stan Maddux

(Michigan City, IN) - The Mayor of Michigan City will be asked to resign during a protest this afternoon over a statement that many in the African American ministerial community find offensive. The protest, largely organized by members of the ministerial community, is scheduled to begin at 3 P.M. outside the Michigan City City Hall.

Pastor Dave Lane said the Mayor called him back over a matter of concern recently and left him a voicemail. Lane said the “hot mic” statement was made after the Mayor thought he had hung up the phone, and the comments were recorded on the voicemail.

“They want a f____ing audience. You know, these black guys. They all want a f___ing audience,” Mayor Duane Parry said on the recording.

“The Mayor made a statement that is so disturbing; I don’t want to repeat it. It’s not something that should be coming from the Chief Executive of our city.”

More Calls for Mayor Parry to Resign
Posted March 11, 2021 12:15pm by Stan Maddux

(Michigan City, IN) - The Michigan City Common Council could be asking the Mayor to resign over his recorded statements labeled as racist. A resolution calling for him to resign has been drafted and is expected to be voted on at the next council meeting.

In addition to his statement, the resolution calls the Mayor Duane Parry’s recent criticism of the Police Chief for asking citizens in writing for donations unprofessional. The resolution also alleges the Mayor demeans and chastises department heads.

MICHIGAN CITY — City Councilwoman Tracie Tillman has been researching impeachment options to forcibly remove Mayor Duane Parry from office. It follows the no-confidence vote the council unanimously passed Tuesday.

“It’s not something to be taken lightly,” Tillman, D-5th, said.

Parry’s office said Friday he is not responding to calls for comment.

The spark that ignited the furor and subsequent pressure for Parry to resign was a voicemail Parry left for Pastor James Lane of Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church. At the end of the message, after Parry apparently believed the call had ended, the mayor said, “These black guys, they all want a (expletive) audience all the time.”

There’s precedent for impeachment of a Hoosier mayor, but it isn’t recent. Terre Haute Mayor Edwin J. Bidaman was impeached in 1906 and removed from office on charges he secretly countermanded orders for enforcing liquor and anti-gambling laws, according to the Tribune-Star of Terre Haute. Terre Haute Mayor Donn M. Roberts was impeached in 1915 after being convicted of multiple election crimes.

In Northwest Indiana, multiple mayors have been removed from office automatically upon conviction of a felony.

Impeachment, however, is a more complicated process.

Park Superintendent Ed Shinn was beside Mayor Duane Parry when the latter left a racist message for Pastor James Lane.

Parry told Lane, who is black, and other members of the Michigan City Spiritual Task Force about Shinn’s reaction.

“He lowered his head, and he shook his head. He had no control over me,” Parry said. “He did not approve of my action at all. He said, ‘Man, you gotta get it together.’”

The mayor said he has been haunted by that moment ever since.

QUOTE
The task force continues to demand Parry resign, he said.

Parry said he has listened to Ashley’s ideas for Michigan City and has taken them to heart. Ashley talked about branding in the city’s downtown, the mayor said.

“In that area, we need manufacturing. We need jobs," Parry said. "I am going to recruit African American entrepreneurs to come to Michigan City and manufacture their products here with Michigan City people.”

QUOTE
City Council members didn’t override Mayor Duane Parry’s veto of their resolution expressing no confidence in the mayor and asking for his resignation, but their sentiment is unchanged.

“That veto meant nothing. This is a resolution of no confidence from us,” council Vice President Angie Deuitch, D-at large, said. “It’s our feeling, it’s what we believe.”

“The resolution is symbolism. The veto is symbolism,” council President Michael Mack, D-3rd, said.

Parry sent a letter to the council after first signing the resolution and later vetoing it.

Councilman Don Przybylinski, D-at large, asked City Clerk Gale Neulieb to read Parry’s letter in full at last week's meeting.

“When I read that, I just couldn’t understand the reasoning,” Przybylinski said. “He says, I disagree with every statement that was made in that resolution.’”

That seems to mean Parry’s not admitting he did anything wrong, Przybylinski said. “This is degrading to all of the council members’ intelligence, dedication and integrity.”

“Deny, deny, deny. We know that playbook,” Councilman Gene Simmons, D-6th, said.

“The mayor should resign and get it over with,” Przybylinski said, an opinion echoed by other council members.

QUOTE
Three letters critical of Mayor Duane Parry were read out loud at a recent City Council meeting.

Council members asked for the letters to be read during the meeting. The letters referred to his apparently racist remarks on a voicemail for a local pastor who is black. Two of the letters accused Parry of being anti-union.

Parry hasn’t responded to an email seeking comment
