MCAS is going back next week on a Hybrid or part time schedule. The press release is below.

Dear MCAS Families:

Today, the State of Indiana placed LaPorte County at an ORANGE status for COVID spread.

For the next two weeks (February 1-5 and 8-12) MCAS will be operating on a hybrid schedule. In-person Traditional students will attend remotely Monday/Friday and in-person on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday. MCAS Online and Virtual Academy will maintain a normal schedule.

MCAS will be making a decision about our operations model for the remainder of February no later than next Wednesday, February 10. (Note: There is no school on February 15, which is the President’s Day holiday.)

FOOD SERVICE INFORMATION
Students attending school in-person will receive meals at school on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Meal service will not be available on Feb 1 and 5, however, a 2-day bag of meals will be available for pick up at schools beginning Feb 8, and each Monday after that during the hybrid schedule. (Orders should always be placed by noon on the Wednesday before the Monday pick up. Meals should be picked up at schools between 4:00-5:30pm.) Watch your email and social media for reminders about ordering and pick up!

Students enrolled in the MCAS Online program and the Michigan City Virtual Academy ONLY will continue to pick up a weekly supply of meals on Mondays at Krueger or MCHS, from 4:00-5:30pm. This includes February 1. (These meals should have been pre-ordered by noon on Wednesday for Monday pickup.)

In addition, at its meeting on Tuesday evening, the Michigan City Area Schools Board of Trustees approved a revised matrix for our decision-making about operations. This is more closely aligned with new recommendations from the Indiana State Department of Health and allows MCAS flexibility in operations when our county is at the “RED” level for COVID spread (allowing us to operate either on a hybrid schedule OR 100% remote.) To view the new matrix please visit our COVID-19 support and information web page at http://educateMC.net/covid.

We look forward to again welcoming many of our students back for in-person instruction next week. Thank you for your continued patience and support!

Dear MCAS Staff and Families:

Today, the State of Indiana placed LaPorte County at a YELLOW status for COVID spread.

There is no school on Monday, February 15 due to the Presidents’ Day holiday. Beginning Tuesday, February 16, MCAS will be operating on a normal schedule. In-person Traditional students will attend school in-person every day. MCAS Online and Virtual Academy will maintain their normal schedule, learning remotely.

This schedule will continue until further notice. MCAS will continue to closely monitor the COVID spread levels in our community and will keep families informed.

FOOD SERVICE INFORMATION

Students attending school in-person will receive meals at school. (The 2-day bags will not be available for pick up next week, even if you pre-ordered.)

Students enrolled in the MCAS Online program and the Michigan City Virtual Academy may pick up a weekly supply of meals on Mondays at Krueger or MCHS from 4:00-5:30pm. These “5-day bags” must be pre-ordered by noon each Wednesday. NOTE: Due to the President’s Day holiday, there is no pickup for 5-day bags on Monday next week. Pick-up will be Tuesday, February 16, at Krueger or MCHS, from 4:00-5:30pm.
ELEMENTARY LEARNING OPTIONS
A reminder for elementary parents: If you would like to switch your K-6 student from MCAS Online to In-person or In-person to MCAS Online for the final trimester (beginning March 1), please complete the form at the link below by this Friday, February 12. If you want to continue with the option your child is currently in, you do NOT need to complete this form.

REQUEST TO CHANGE LEARNING OPTION - ELEMENTARY

WEATHER CLOSINGS/DELAYS
Winter weather is again upon us! If you are not already receiving text messages about delays or closings due to weather, you can sign up here: http://educateMC.net/texts. This information will also be shared with local media and posted on our website and social media.

In the event we have to cancel school in-person due to weather, all classes will be held online. Please be aware that this will not be an “e-Learning Day” as we have had in the past; instead, it will involve live “synchronous” instruction by teachers.

IMPORTANT DATES

Monday, February 15 - President’s Day (No School)

Monday, March 1 - eLearning Day. On this day, students will log in from home to complete assignments. Our teachers and staff will be participating in professional development. Lessons will be “asynchronous” (posted online) on this day.

PARENT CONFERENCES
Schools will be reaching out to parents with information about opportunities for virtual meetings with teachers. The dates may vary depending on the school and teacher.

HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
We will continue to observe the health and safety precautions outlined in our Reopening Plan. Please remember our “SWIM” Acronym…

S (Symptoms)
Screen for COVID symptoms daily. Take your child’s temperature, and keep students home if they feel sick, have a cough, sore throat, headache, or a loss of taste or smell.

W (Water Bottle)
Students should bring a full water bottle (labeled with name) to school each day. Touchless water filling stations are available for refills.

I (Immunizations)
Students lacking immunizations will be excluded.

M (Masks)
Masks are required on buses and at school. Please make sure students have a clean face mask each day.

I am so grateful for the dedication and hard work of our teachers and staff, and the continued support of our students and their families during this time. We look forward to resuming our normal schedule next week!

Sincerely,

Dr. Barbara Eason-Watkins
Superintendent
