Some things to know about Michigan City basketball vs the good ol days.

1. When Elston was winning sectional titles annually, they were one of the biggest schools in the entire state of Indiana. In the late 60's Elston was graduating about 1000 kids a year, meaning they had about 4000 kids in grades 9-12 to pick a basketball team from. As of the last release that number was 1701. For comparisons sake, LaPorte is 2009, Chesterton is 2030, Valpo is 2065, Merrillville is 2228, Portage is 2486, Crown Point is 2664, and Lake Central is 3196. Lake Central equals almost two MCHS's in terms of enrollment. If you look at the top teams in the state of Indiana, they are almost all over 3000 kids. Carmel is actually pushing 5000. City's population is down something like 10,000 people over those days. Even since 2011 City has fallen from the 39th biggest school in the state, to the 51st.

2. When Elston was winning sectional every year, their sectional was a joke. Most of the schools were pre-consolidation schools which had something like 100 kids in them. Today those schools can't legally exist, and have been gone for decades. City had 20 to 30 times as many kids as most of the schools in their sectional. Today, City is by far the smallest school in their sectional because of the class system.
Michigan City is going to be the only non 6A school in the Duneland Conference for football the next two years and it is projected that MCAS is going to continue to lose between 50-100 students in grades K-12 every year over the next decade. Might even be more if the Michigan City Christian Academy ever expand or any Charter schools start up in the district like they have in Gary. I'm really surprised that any charter schools hasn't already opened up in Michigan City.

The Great Lakes conference is looking to expand with Gary West Side and East Chicago joining the four Hammond public schools. Considering it's declining cith population and school enrollment and urban profile and pedigree this would be the perfect time for Michigan City to depart from the DAC and become the 7th school in the Great Lakes Conference.

City would still be able to maintain it's rivalries in both revenue and club sports with schools like La Porte and Chesterton by scheduling non conference tilts and in sectional play.

I don't want to hear any nonsense about how playing all the schools in the DAC puts MC more formidable for winning sectionals because City has not won a sectional in boys basketball in 20 years.

Really shocked to see that South Bend Riley at 10-14 will be one of the teams in the Michigan City 4A Regional on Saturday. Wolves traveled to South Bend destroyed the Wildcats back on December 9th. Munster is in it to and City beat the Mustangs 71-56 on January 20th.

Yes. Let's leave a conference based on our struggles in boys basketball and football for a confererence whose schools don't field full teams in tennis, golf, swimming, let alone a gymnastics team at all. It's a great idea.

Still waiting for you to actually come out and define "urban profile and pedigree."
