Two questions for anyone who knows the answers:
1. Can the Republicans fill seats in contests where they don't have anyone in the primary, e.g. Councilman-at-Large? 2. If a candidate gets more than 50% of the total votes cast for a position, is there still a general election contest? |

If a candidate gets more than 50% of the total votes cast for a position, is there still a general election contest? Yes and Yes. 1. If there are individuals interested in running after the primary, they can send a letter of intent to the chairman and a caucus will be called. The caucus then decides who is slated to open spots on the ballot. 2. The primary is merely the means of choosing who the respective party's nominee will be on the November ballot. |

QUOTE 21 candidates seek nine council seats By Matt Field Staff Writer Published: Saturday, February 19, 2011 5:06 PM CST MICHIGAN CITY — If the current crop of Common Council members wants to hold on to their seats, they’ll have to work for it: 21 people have filed to run for nine seats in the upcoming elections. With Councilman Bob McKee running for mayor and Councilwoman Angie Nelson not seeking re-election, six people are vying for the three at-large seats. Councilman Joe Doyle, 72, will seek a third term. Likewise, with Councilman Ron Meer running for mayor, his Third Ward seat has become hotly contested property, with four candidates vying for the Democratic nomination. * Councilman Rich Murphy, D-First Ward, has a Democratic and Republican candidate hoping to take his seat. Councilmen Phil Jankowski, D-Sixth Ward, and Marc Espar, D-Second Ward, each face challengers, as do Councilwomen Pat Boy, D-Fourth Ward, and Faye Moore, D-Fifth Ward. The challengers are first-time candidates for the council seats. They include former Michigan City chamber President Tim Bietry, 65, who is running for an at-large seat. He wants to see through the North End development initiatives begun under departing Mayor Chuck Oberlie. “I’ve been in a position to play a role in that so far,” he said. Bietry will run against John Hendricks, 43, among others. Both are Democrats. Hendricks is a site-design engineer for a La Porte company. Doyle said he doesn’t know the qualifications of each of his opponent. “I hope I get re-elected one more time at least,” he said. Espar will have to fend off John Morse, 50, to keep his Second Ward seat. A member of the Board of Zoning Appeals, Morse said the council needs new faces. The Republican candidate for Murphy’s First Ward seat, Kevin Walsh, 61, criticized the current crop of city leaders. “You go through some of these neighborhoods and their curbs are crumbling and they’re putting a million dollars into a park,” he said. “It doesn’t make any sense to me.” Jankowski faces Chris Schwanke, 43, in the Sixth Ward in the Democratic primary. Schwanke, who owns a maintenance business, stressed promoting the ward, while Jankowski, 61, suggested that primary elections are good. “It doesn’t make it as easy, but it serves the public better,” he said. Boy, 60, will have to fend off a Democratic primary challenge from Mahmoud “Mike” Mussa to win a third term in the fourth ward. “It’s not much of a primary election if nobody’s running against you,” she said. Running to replace Meer in the Third Ward Democratic primary, Danny Brown, 52, a pastor at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, predicted he’d be victorious in a tough race with four contenders. His opponent, Keith Devereaux, 53, doesn’t agree. “It’s going to be who gets out there and knocks on the doors and gets their message out the clearest,” he said. Not all candidates could be reached for comment. The primary election is May 3. |
