From the Mayor's Office:With an extended period of extreme heat and humidity expected to envelop the area by the middle of the week, Mayor Meer would like the citizens of Michigan City to know that several cooling centers will be open.
Cooling centers will be available at the following locations: Michigan City Police Station (24 hours) 102 W. 2nd Street Michigan City Senior Center (8:00-4:00) 2 on the Lake Michigan City City Hall (8:00-4:30) 100 E. Michigan Blvd. Michigan City Public Library (during business hours) 100 E. 4th Street Public health officials recommend that people spend at least part of the day in an air conditioned environment. If someone doesn’t have air conditioning or can’t get to an air conditioned location, they should take a cool bath or shower during the day. Health officials advise that even a brief spell in cool water or air conditioning allows the body to recover from the cumulative effects of high heat and humidity. Mayor Meer urges the citizens of Michigan City to check on family, friends, neighbors, and especially the elderly during these extended times of high heat and humidity to make sure everyone stays healthy. Any citizen needing transportation to a cooling center may call the M.C. Police Department’s non-emergency number at: 219-874-3221. |
