Absentee voting has started

LA PORTE - La Porte County Clerk Bob Behler on Tuesday reminded voters that absentee voting at the courthouses in Michigan City and La Porte is now underway.

Voting will take place on the same type of voting machines that will be used at the polling places on Nov. 6.

Voters who are registered to vote in Michigan City, La Porte, Kingsbury, Westville, Wanatah, LaCrosse, Long Beach, Pottawatomie Park or Michiana Shores who may be out of the area on Nov. 6 may cast their ballots at either courthouse for their particular election.

The La Porte County voting offices will be open from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and from noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to noon Monday, Nov. 5, which is the last day for absentee voting.

The offices will also be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 27 and Nov. 3, the two Saturdays prior to the election.

The same identification rules apply for absentee voting in person as at the polling places on Election Day, Behler said.

Those wishing to vote must show a valid photo ID, such as an Indiana driver's license or passport, or any form of identification that shows a photo of the voter, the name of the voter, is issued by the federal government or the state of Indiana, and which has an expiration date.

In the case of the government ID card of a military retiree, "Indefinite" or "Indef" is acceptable as an expiration date.

Those who do not currently have an Indiana driver's license or other valid form of ID may obtain an Indiana Identification Card free of charge from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
