I am really hoping it isn't true. Lee has done, and is doing, great things up at MCHS. Without having any idea if it is true, or what exactly is going on, I don't want to see him leave us.

Agreed....I've talked to some friends at the HS, and other people I've met a long the way about him and not a negative word has been said. Even students I have spoken with like him, again not a negative word.

He has been suspended for Alleged cell phone conversations with a former student. This comes from a phone call from Superintendent Eason-Watkins.

If the conversations were with a former student, then what's the problem? If the conversations occurred while the person was a student, I could understand, but if that person is no longer a student, they must be at least 18 and not at the school any longer.
Unless....
If the conversations were threatening in nature, then there could be a problem.

Alleged inappropriate cell phone conversations w former student.....and yes it would depend on When the conversations took place. Could be a student who's just at a different school now. Who knows.....hopefully he can clear this up...he has been a great principal....

Thanks for the information. I am hoping that City is doing the opposite of what LaPorte did and is reacting very strongly to a very serious allegation. Hopefully that allegation ends up being false, for both the sake of the Dabagia family, and for the sake of MCHS and MCAS. I guess at this point we let the investigation run its course.

Michigan City High School principal put on leave for alleged inappropriate conduct

Michigan City High School Principal Lee Dabagia was placed on administrative leave Wednesday after allegations of inappropriate cell phone contact with a former student were made. The school system is cooperating with Michigan City Police who are conducting a criminal investigation, said Michigan City School Director of Communications Betsy Kohn.

Michigan City School Superintendent Barbara Eason-Watkins informed school staff of the situation early his morning and also communicated with high school families. “The safety and welfare of our students remains our top priority,” she said.

“The school system has been proactive in informing the staff and parents about the situation,” said Kohn. “As a district it is our policy to take action as information becomes available.”

Kohn was uncertain about a school policy regarding cell phone communications between faculty and students but said they are in the process of instituting a formal policy on social networking use.

Dabagia has been school principal for two years. He worked for the Michigan City school system as middle school teacher from 1994 until 1996 and was re-hired in 2009 as curriculum coach. He was named associate principal in 2010 and became principal in 2011. According to Kohn, Dabagia was a Duneland School system teacher prior to returning to Michigan City schools in 2009.

In addition to a facebook page started by kids at the high school, there is also an on-line petition which started yesterday and is being circulated for the return of Lee Dabagia to the high school as principal. So far it has 82 signatures.

MICHIGAN CITY — No decisions have been made on whether to charge the principal at Michigan City High School with a crime for alleged inappropriate communication with a former student.

Lee Dabagia is currently on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of a police and school district investigation, according to school corporation officials.

It's alleged that Dabagia had inappropriate cell phone communication with a former student. Specifics of the allegations were not released because the investigation is still ongoing, authorities said.

Michigan City Police Chief Mark Swistek said several detectives have been assigned to the case. He would not say when the case would be forwarded to the LaPorte County prosecutor’s office for a decision on pursuing criminal charges.

Michigan City Area Schools Superintendent Barbara Eason-Watkins on Oct. 17 informed school staff and high school families of the situation involving Dabagia, who became principal at the high school last year. “The safety and welfare of our students remains our top priority,” said Eason-Watkins.

Dabagia was previously associate principal and cirriculum coach at the high school and prior to that was a teacher at Krueger Middle School.
