KTR Corp. to expand in Michigan City

MICHIGAN CITY | KTR Corp. plans to grow its North American headquarters in Michigan City with a $1.6 million investment that will add 20 jobs by 2014, the company said Friday.

"Indiana's manufacturing sector is thriving thanks to companies like KTR Corp. that continue to invest in our state," Dan Hasler, secretary of commerce and CEO of the Indiana Economic Development Corp., said in a news release. "Our distinct advantages in location, infrastructure, workforce and regulatory environment have put Indiana on the map as a world-class business destination."

KTR Corp. manufactures power transmission components.

The company, a subsidiary of German-based KTR Kupplungstechnick, GmbH, is investing $1.6 million in computer-numerical-control machinery and in renovations at its 42,000-square-foot manufacturing, warehousing and sales facility, 122 Anchor Road.

Renovations and equipment installation already are under way and are expected to be completed next year.

The company employs 43 people, and hiring has begun for additional engineering, production management, sales and production workers.

"We chose Indiana because we have been located here for over 20 years," said William Ketcham, KTR Corp.'s president. "Our objective is to manufacture products of the highest quality, provide superior service, produce availability and expert technical assistance at the lowest possible cost to our customers."

The Indiana Economic Development Corp., the state's commerce agency, offered KTR Corp. as much as $150,000 in conditional tax credits based on the company's job creation plans. The tax credits are performance-based, so the company will not be eligible to claim the incentives until Indiana residents are hired.

Michigan City authorized changing a boundary in the enterprise zone as part of the project.

"I am excited about the commitment KTR Corp. has shown to Michigan City," Michigan City Mayor Ron Meer said. "It is exciting for Michigan City to have the leading global manufacturer of wind generator couplings expand its U.S. headquarters here. I am proud to have KTR Corp., a contributor to the alternative energy initiative, call Michigan City home."

The company was founded in Michigan City in 1988 and now supplies nearly 80 percent of all couplings in wind turbines around the world.
