TERRY RINKER THE FASTEST; SEEBOLD WINS MATCH RACE IN LA PORTE!

Saturday // May 31, 2014

LaPORTE, Indiana – Saturday, May 31, 2014 – Defending race champion Terry Rinker of Tampa, Florida out qualified the field of 18 drivers with a 39.05 second lap around the one mile (1.6 kilometer) six-pin race circuit as the native from Indiana will be once again be a major threat for victory as he goes after his 24th career victory at the opening round of the 2014 U.S. F1 Powerboat Racing Tour in LaPorte, Indiana.

The driver who was raised in nearby Syracuse, Indiana set the field alight as he beat out five-time Champion Tim Seebold of Osage Beach, Missouri by almost one-half of a second in qualifying. The driver who has won three straight times since LaPorte event a year ago came back capturing the “Match Race” event later in the afternoon earning more confidence in his hopes of winning sixth title and his record setting 34th career Grand Prix win of his 33 year career.

“We felt we had the right set-up for the course that was very technical in nature,” said Terry. “We had problems in both the Match Race and later in the first ten lap heat but we think we can solve these overnight and be ready for the Grand Prix tomorrow.”

For Seebold, he came back strong by mid-afternoon winning the “Match Race” event. “We feel like we weren't our best in qualifying but we made up for it during the one on one event,” said the third generation Seebold driver from outside Saint Louis, Missouri. “We just missed the first 10 lap heat race by 1.3 seconds and I think we can do better tomorrow in the 35 lap event to keep our winning streak alive.”

While Tim was beating Miami, Florida driver and U.S. F1 Powerboat President Jose Mendana Jr. in the Match Race final, Illinois driver Chris Fairchild was focusing on the first of three short ten lap heat races leading into tomorrow's 35 lap Grand Prix final.

“We came off the dock like a rocket in the heat race this afternoon from third place and I was able to move to the front and then hold off both Tim and Terry for the victory,” said the Paw Paw, Illinois veteran. “It's been 23 races since I last won and we are really hungry for turning out luck around on this circuit that we really love here in LaPorte.”

In time trails the top five were Terry Rinker, Tim Seebold, Chris Fairchild, Carlos Mendana and his older brother Jose separated by 4.35 seconds with 16 of the 18 boats taking the one lap qualifying run.

In the late afternoon heat race Fairchild took the ten lap race in 06:44.02 seconds winning by 1.3 seconds over Seebold and 18 seconds over a slowing Terry Rinker in third.

Last years Rookie-of-the-Year Carlos Mendana from Miami, Florida was fourth 22 seconds behind Rinker in with older brother Jose a further eight seconds back running the event in 07:32.36 time ahead of Minnesota's Mark Welch in sixth and Jimmie Merlaeu seventh.

Canadian Tammy Wolf was eighth as she finished ahead of Mike Beegle of Michigan. Rounding out the top ten was Wisconsin's Wade Tuchscherer looking for his first top five performance of his career tomorrow afternoon.

In the Formula Light class St. Joseph, Michigan's Steve Merleau was at the top of the charts with 67 points a pair of top three finishes along with a fifth in three heats leading to tomorrow's 30 lap final on the two-thirds of a mile four pin circuit.

Veteran racer Mark Schmerbauch of Greenfield, Wisconsin was second with 66 points while Amanda Hagerl came home third as she came up with a victory in her third and final heat of the afternoon ending with 61 points.

Eighteen F1 drivers from throughout North America will battle for two more ten lap heat races to determine the starting line-up for tomorrow's scheduled 16:00 local (4:00pm); 22:00 GMT 35 lap main race for the 2nd Annual Maple City Grand Prix at the opening round of the 2014 U.S. F1 Powerboat Tour and the start of the 30th season of F1 racing in North America.
