I watched the Blue Chip ceremony this morning, the slideshow presentation with Fire Radio Calls were played and the part at the end of the presentation where all the rescuers names were displayed as well as the part in the ceremony when the EMT's were introduced was very emotional.

QUOTE MICHIGAN CITY | Crews using ground sensing equipment were back at Mount Baldy this week, but it might be several weeks before it's known if any more holes exist beneath the sand. About a dozen workers from the United States Environmental Protection Agency and National Park Service used conductivity equipment to scan the large sand dune looking for any abnormalities beneath the surface, said Bruce Rowe, a spokesman for the National Park Service. Rowe said about half of the 42 acres of Mount Baldy were covered on Monday. Crews are scheduled to go back out with the ground-penetrating equipment on Wednesday to scan, perhaps, the remainder of the acreage, Rowe said. |

The closure of Mt. Baldy is a fitting memorial.

The closure of Mt. Baldy is a fitting memorial. I feel that is the main reason Mt. Baldy remains closed. |

I know people are not going to like me mentioning this but this incident occurred in an area of the dune that was cordoned off and clearly posted that it was closed to the public due to the dune restoration as it has been the case for about the prior five seasons. The national park service lacks the resources to patrol and enforce the restoration order. I feel that is the main reason Mt. Baldy remains closed. I think that is an absolutely fair assessment. Do they close down Niagara Falls because someone goes over the falls in a barrel? The kid was in an area that was both roped off and signed as closed. |

The Chicago Tribune looks back on the Miracle on Mt Baldy. Some great interviews in there.
