Porter County's unemployment rate stood at 4.5 percent, the 21st highest statewide. The seasonally unadjusted jobless rate in the Gary metro area — which is made up of Lake, Porter, Newton and Jasper counties — plunged to 5.2 percent in March, down from 6.4 percent the previous month, according to Workforce Development. Unemployment in the Michigan City metro area, which is just LaPorte County, fell to 5.1 percent, down from 6.6 percent. The jobless rate in the Gary metro was down 1.8 percent as compared to the same time a year ago, while unemployment has fallen 2 percent year-over-year in the Michigan City metro. |
