Senate approves bill to revamp local government
 Indianapolis - The Senate has passed a bill that could spur Indiana counties to overhaul their local governments.Under the proposal, county commissioners could choose to replace the county commission with an executive who runs county government like a mayor runs a city. They could also choose a town government structure, eliminating the county commission and the county council, and replacing them with a board of supervisors. The board of supervisors would hire a county manager to hire day-to-day operations. A third option would be to turn the issue over to voters, who would decide whether to change the system or keep it as is. Lake and Marion Counties would be exempt from the bill. The GOP-controlled Senate approved the proposal 30-19, sending it to the Democrat-ruled House for consideration.  * "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
