I thought we got a chance to vote on a tax increase in the next election. That is what killed it last time.

If you asked anyone if it's ok to raise the cost of anything by 50%, you would be outraged. This is the sneaky way the government with the media works. "It's only 0.5% more." Hogwash - it's 50% more! MC had a vote on raising the property tax 17c per $100k of assessed value - and it got defeated rather handily. And you're ok with a 50% increase in your income tax?!? Mind boggling. Meanwhile you'll rail against "whoever" that you gas, bread, milk, eggs and just about everything else is up about 25% this last year.

Mike D. I completely agree with you. We, the taxpayers, should get a say. I want smaller government, I would vote this down in a heartbeat. If they feel they need this increase for “safety”, then cut something else out of the budget. We pay enough already and with prices going up, they want more!

QUOTE
n increase in the local income for public safety was approved Monday night by the La Porte County Council.

The money generated by the increase from .095-percent to 1.45 percent will go toward things like competitive wages to stop paramedics, police, and other public safety workers from leaving for much higher pay elsewhere.

Also eligible for the dollars are updated public safety equipment and a new La Porte County Jail if there’s a decision to build a new holding facility years from now.

The vote was 6-to-1 in favor of the increase, with Mark Yagelski casting the only vote in opposition.

The only "no" vote was District 3. Mark Yagelski - my rep. He listened to what was being said, which is, simply, there is no plan and it being pursued in a poor way. The "republican conservatives" who voted for the 52% tax increase are: Cunningham, Gramarossa, Garner (with self interest), Rosenbaum.

The false narratives that were used to pass the 52% increase were:
- salaries need increasing - perhaps for the more senior staff who have decided against advancement , this is probably true. Officer Morse is a 19 year veteran of the sheriff's department and made $58k - yes, too low - but starting salary ($50k) is equivalent to neighboring counties and advanced (det etc) is a little lower. The salaries in MC have been updated; LP yes lower, but the city has no money due to some questionable spending; It should be noted all of these people got bonuses and salary increases last year. Gramarossa mentioned that EMS starting is $15/hr recently but it would be mentioned that these folks hardly ever see "action" - they are drivers and trainees. In Porter, they get paid less - and even use HS students. The benefits for Public safety are seldom brought up, but their benefits are incredibly generous for those that stick around 20 years or more. Like Officer Heeg stated, you can enter at 21, leave at 46, and essentially have your full salary and health paid for (with some exceptions).

- property tax 'rebates" have lowered what the counties get from state - well, yes, but this is now a constitutional amendment which has been very popular, and there is no such thing as a 'rebate" - check your own tax bill. The rates are fixed forever and local governments need to tight up, not "tax and spend". They love to whine about this but we have been living with it for a decade - enough.

- cunningham mentioned that "the lower classes use the services the most" - totally incorrect and insensitive. Fact - you use 95% of your medical costs in the last 2 years of your life; the seniors in our county are not "the lower classes" - in fact they are well off - yet they use over 50% of the EMS resources. Though Mr Haney put forth great data on mortality after 60 minutes from the call, I got news: we are all going to die at the day and hour our creator has fixed (with the exception of pre-mature expiration due to self defeating behavior). Haney's analysis will have to be recalculated with the installation of EMS Rolling Prairie. further, fire took on narcan without much debate. this is a big burden on the department - but they took it on. Police would do better to screen domestic calls - but they just dispatch willy-nilly. if these calls were better managed, there would be no shortage or delays - this is completely self-inflicted and now you are being asked to pay for it.

- there is no plan for the money. It has been asked, many times, what are the plans for the money - distribution, reduction in Boyd and General, plan b for no workers, and it goes on. Gramarossa and Rosenbaum have both said "there is a plan" but nothing forthcoming. Mr Rosenbaum already admitted that money would be moved around - they've already started spending it on volunteer fire, bridging health insurance for public safety, salary increases for non-emergency county employees, a new jail and a list of equipment that Santa will have trouble filling. Rosenbaum said he would publish the balance between General and Boyd - nothing yet - typical politician.

- retirees wont be taxed - well, for SS, true, but most live on IRA and 401(k), too and those will be taxed. Mr Stevens et all keep talking about $10 for a family making $20k/yr - nobody makes that - it will be more like $80. That's a tank of gas, the cable or phone bill, a night out for dinner. You tax bill go up by 50% - the most inflationary bill of this inflationary cycle - by far. Stop complaining about "Biden" raising your gas costs - and start voting out "republican conservatives" who "tax and spend"!

in closing, i would add that most people who live here love it here and don't mind making less money. if you don't love it here and want another $10k/yr, welcome to see what neighboring counties actually offer - it's less in terms of quality of life. Maybe better schools, maybe quicker services, maybe just smarter government - but it is not Laporte County. I make less than I should - but I love it here and likely will retire here.

Please vote out ROSENBAUM and GRAMAROSSA today!

They friggin RAISED my local property tax by 100%. Local area news outlets sez it was an erroneous assessment and that I should pay it anyways. Supposedly, refunds will be sent by fall.
