I heard the city may not put up the holiday Christmas lights at Washington Park and down Franklin Street this year due to the economy. I haven't seen anything in the paper....anyone know about this? If I'm wrong, or if I missed it, please let me know.

Mayor Oberlie was talking about it on the morning show on WIMS two days ago. It sure sounded like they were gearing up for it.

I think they're done with Franklin Street. This year instead of one pathetic string of white lights strung through the crown of one tree at each corner, there's one pathetic string of colored lights wrapped around the trunk of one tree at each corner.

My best pal Wally Veden is a bigwig at the park - the Christmas light thing is his pride and joy, so I'm sure I would have heard about it if it was canned. That Festival of Lights is SO Indiana - which is why I love it! As I didn't come home last year you can BET I'll be staggering - OOPS! - riding through there at least a few times!

We just added a brief video from last year's Washington Park display to our You Tube site: http://www.youtube.com/user/WEFMradio As has been noted the Festival of Lights will kick-off on Saturday December 5 in Washington Park. Lighting options are under consideration for Franklin Street. The strands on the tree trunks are for evaluation purposes only. In fact the idea has been rejected. Because the trees are so large, lighting them properly is not pracitcal. The park department is researching other options. chuck |

Thanks for the info Mayor O. As always, we appreciate your input.
In other towns I have lived in, they hang lighted holiday banners from the street poles. It always looks classy IMO but I'm sure there would be significant cost to buying them all at once. Makes the empty street look as if it was an after thought and some lights were left over from the park. |
