Dan Plath, president of the Northwest Indiana Paddling Association, speaks to paddlers in a 2009 expedition from Chicago to Michigan City that NWIPA held to raise awareness of the Lake Michigan shoreline. This stop was at Lakeview Park in Beverly Shores, Ind. (South Bend Tribune Photo/JOSEPH DITS)

QUOTE
This week, 75 miles of Lake Michigan’s coastline from the north side of Chicago to New Buffalo will gain national recognition as a trail for sea kayakers. To earn the status, the “Lake Michigan Water Trail” had to have a public place to launch a kayak every three to eight miles, Plath said. It also needed loads of support. So, Plath said, he and other advocates recruited 43 letters from mayors of coastal communities, congressmen, owners of public access sites, national paddling organizations and a range of governmental, park and tourism officials.
